The Role

LEGAL TALENT MANAGER - BC REGION
VANCOUVER OFFICE

Working closely with the Legal Talent Senior Director, Advisor, and Coordinator, this position plays a key role in managing the summer and articling student program, and will be responsible for the performance management and professional development of paralegals, as well as supporting associate programs. As part of the Firm’s People team, this role will collaborate regionally and nationally with the HR, Learning & Development, and Equity Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) teams as well as the Chief People Officer, Chief EDI Officer and Total Rewards Director. Responsibilities

Student Program

  • Serves as a key Fasken representative for law students, leading specific strategic initiatives to raise the profile of the firm (law school sponsorship, liaising with student clubs, social media, etc.) and plans recruitment events on-campus and at the firm (leads firm tours, speaks on panels, attends career fairs, conducts interviews etc.)
  • Manages all aspects of the summer and articling student program, including orientation, rotations, mentorship programs, secondments, social events and other ad hoc initiatives
  • Manages student training, including identifying training needs, developing and presenting training programs and/or liaising with appropriate presenters
  • Manages and delivers performance reviews to summer and articling students
  • Manages the associate hire back process for articling students
  • Assists articling students not hired back with their search for an associate position

Paralegals

  • Directs the engagement, performance management and professional development of paralegals, and is supported by HR in their recruitment, onboarding and offboarding

Associate Program

  • Supports the Legal Talent Senior Director and Business Unit Managers with the associate program including drafting annual performance reviews and assisting with the compensation process

EDI

  • Manages regional EDI events and liaises with the national and regional EDI team as well as the Regional Affinity Group Chairs to ensure appropriate EDI initiatives are implemented in the BC Region.
  • Under the direction of the Legal Talent Senior Director, works closely with the EDI team to implement strategies to attract and retain a diverse talent pipeline and to ensure our people processes are inclusive

PD | Events

  • Works with the Legal Talent Coordinator to plan and deliver the annual internal professional development program
  • This role also may be involved in planning other events including wellness initiatives and other special projects

Qualifications and Experience

  • Holds an LL.B or J.D
  • 1-3 years of practice experience as a lawyer (ideally in a large firm private practice setting)
  • Demonstrated interest and experience with student recruitment, mentoring, and related initiatives
  • Legal talent and/or HR experience, as well as event planning and experience leading presentations, and familiarity with EDI best practices

Skills and Knowledge

  • Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, organizational, management/leadership and multi-tasking skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build rapport with different stakeholders in a law-firm setting
  • Ability to work both independently and part of a team, take initiative and think strategically in a fast paced setting

Compensation

The salary range for this position is $130,000 - $150,000 annually; the base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, internal and market equity.
