Powertech Labs - Legal Counsel

Powertech Labs, a fully-owned research and testing subsidiary of BC Hydro, has a full-time opportunity for a Legal Counsel. Our legal team is an integral part of our operations, supporting the organization with legal expertise and advice.

Position Overview: Reporting to the General Counsel, the successful candidate will provide legal advice across various areas, oversee outside counsel, and support contractual and legal matters, including complex transactions and governance issues related to Powertech and its US subsidiary.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. General corporate work, including drafting and reviewing contracts such as NDAs, Master Service Agreements, MOUs, and Consulting Services Agreements.
  2. Structuring legal relationships with suppliers, customers, regulators, and other stakeholders.
  3. Handling legal issues related to international transactions.
  4. Supporting Powertech's transition to automated document management systems, including AI tools.

Qualifications:

  • Law degree from a Canadian law school or a recognized U.S. institution; eligibility to practice law in British Columbia.
  • Minimum of five years' post-call experience, preferably in-house or at a law firm.
  • Experience with commercial transactions, cross-border transactions, procurement law, and familiarity with related legal areas such as intellectual property and regulatory law.
  • Strong communication skills, organizational abilities, and discretion.
  • Experience supporting engineering-heavy environments is an asset.

Additional Details:

  • Full-Time, Management & Professionals role, based in Surrey, BC, with hybrid work options.
  • Candidates with less experience may be considered for a P3 level role.
  • Applicants may be required to complete assessments or presentations during the selection process.
  • Maintaining a valid Driver's License (Class 5) is a condition of employment.
