Your opportunity:

The Department of Physiology is one of the largest basic science departments in the Faculty of Medicine and one of the largest physiology departments in North America. It is a highly interdisciplinary department with many local and global partnerships, allowing excellent opportunities for intensive research training and teaching in medical science.

Under the supervision of Dr. Michael Gollob, the Lab Technician will work with large genomic datasets and bioinformatic software. You will support collecting experimental data, verifying results and passing on findings. In collaboration with other staff and course instructors, you will assist in setting up the lab. You will also be a point of contact for students and employees on lab techniques, experimental procedures and protocols. Utilizing your strong communication and organizational skills, you will be a key member of the team to ensure operational success.

Responsibilities
  • Applying established standards when preparing routine samples for research projects and/or experiments
  • Applying established standards when selecting and preparing equipment for routine laboratory experiments and/or assays
  • Collecting experimental data, verifying results and passing on findings
  • Applying established standards when determining material requirements for lab set up based on timetables and requisitions information
  • Collaborating with staff and course instructors to determine lab set up requirements
  • Providing detailed explanations and demonstrating procedures to students and/or employees on lab techniques, experimental procedures and protocols
  • Coordinating routine maintenance of lab equipment
  • Ordering supplies with approval
Essential Qualifications
  • Master of Science in Molecular Biology and Genetics or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience with biometric software analysis, including working with large genomic datasets
  • Demonstrated experience performing molecular biology techniques and molecular laboratory skills (e.g. PCR, site-directed mutagenesis, cloning)
  • Experience with R programming for data analysis
  • Demonstrated experience collecting experimental data, verifying results and passing on findings
  • Demonstrated experience applying established standards when determining material requirements for lab set up
  • Experience coordinating routine maintenance of lab equipment
  • Experience ordering supplies
  • Experience with computer software tools (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Illustrator)
  • Strong organizational skills, including time management, multi-tasking, and attention to detail
