Overview

Journeyperson - Automotive Mechanic (Fleet and Manufacturing Services) – REPOST

Located in Vancouver, the City seeks colleagues to help shape sustainability, reconciliation, equity and quality of life. The role supports Fleet Management through maintenance and repair of a large vehicle fleet, including police, fire, city vehicles, garbage and recycling trucks, with a replacement value of $175 million.

Main Purpose and Function

Fleet & Manufacturing Services provides engineering, procurement, maintenance and repair, outfitting, fabrication, inventory, and related services for internal and external clients. As an Automotive Service Technician, you will maintain and repair the fleet of vehicles and equipment, with focus on quality and timely work to support clients.

The regular work schedule is 3:10 PM to 12:34 AM, Monday to Friday, based on a 9-day fortnight. Shifts and locations may be adjusted as operationally required in accordance with the Collective Agreement.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Work occurs primarily at the fully equipped Garage at Manitoba Yard or National Yard and other satellite facilities with a team of about 150 employees. Responsibilities include inspecting, diagnosing, performing routine maintenance, and supporting outfitting/up-fitting of new vehicles, including approved modification requests. Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge and experience in installation of components, reading and creating electrical schematics, building and troubleshooting electrical systems, and practical experience in building fleets to meet customer needs. The role covers a variety of work from small to heavy equipment, automobiles, light to heavy trucks, plant and facilities maintenance, manufacturing and building maintenance.

The City supports continued education and development and offers training on newly purchased fleet equipment.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Automotive Service Technician Certificate of Qualifications (T.Q.), Inter-Provincial Red Seal Endorsement.
  • Red Seal certification is preferred.
  • Completion of Grade 10, supplemented by technical courses related to the work.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in automotive and mechanical trades.
  • Thorough knowledge of braking systems.
  • Understanding of hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Ability to perform complex electrical and mechanical tasks in overhaul, repair, maintenance and adjustment of electrical systems in motorcycles, automobiles and marine equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions with sketches and diagrams.
  • Ability to interpret manufacturers' instructions and diagrams.
  • Ability to requisition parts and materials.
  • Ability to operate vehicles and heavy-duty equipment.
  • Ability to plan, assign and supervise one or more subordinates.
  • Ability to inspect and test City vehicles for road worthiness according to provincial standards.
  • Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment.
  • Agility, muscular coordination and strength for heavy manual work.
  • Superior mechanical aptitude.
Driver's License and Record Checks
  • A current and valid Class 5 BC Driver's License or higher and a satisfactory National Safety Code driving record
    • 5 years accumulation of no more than 9 points, not in excess of 3 points per year
    • 3 years accumulation of no more than 1 preventable work-related driving or equipment operating accident in any single year
  • Employees who do not demonstrate a satisfactory driving record will have their application reviewed in more detail
