ABOUT UNIONWARE:

UnionWare ULC, based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, has been building and supporting membership-management software for labour unions since 1998. The platform centralizes tasks like membership tracking, dues processing, grievance handling, and event coordination - serving unions across Canada, the U.S., and Australia. Rooted in Winnipeg’s vibrant tech community, UnionWare combines local talent and global reach to empower organized labor with streamlined, data-driven tools.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

The IT Specialist is responsible for maintaining and evolving UnionWare’s technology infrastructure to ensure secure, efficient, and reliable operations for both clients and internal teams. This includes managing on-premises and cloud-based systems, supporting staff with technical issues, implementing modern security and networking practices, and assisting with systems integration and automation initiatives.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • System Administration & Support – Maintain and support internal systems, network infrastructure, servers, and cloud environments (Microsoft 365, Azure, AWS)
  • Technical Support – Provide responsive technical assistance to internal staff and clients, ensuring timely resolution of hardware, software, and connectivity issues
  • Infrastructure Management – Monitor and optimize the performance of network, communications, and system infrastructure, including virtual machines, firewalls, and data storage systems
  • Security & Compliance – Implement and monitor cybersecurity measures such as MFA, endpoint protection, patch management, and data backup/recovery processes
  • Procurement & Implementation – Research, purchase, configure, and deploy new systems and hardware to meet evolving business and client needs
  • Client Hosting & Environments – Set up, monitor, and manage client hosting environments, ensuring reliability, scalability, and adherence to security best practices
  • Documentation & Process Improvement – Maintain clear technical documentation and contribute to the continuous improvement of IT processes, standards, and automation
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration – Work closely with development, support, and operations teams to ensure seamless system integration and consistent service delivery
  • Other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • University Degree or College Diploma in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in systems administration, IT support, or network management
  • Familiarity with Windows and Unix-like environments (FreeBSD, Ubuntu, Debian)
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Microsoft Azure) and virtualization tools (Hyper‑V)
  • Strong understanding of network and application protocols, firewalls, and VPNs
  • Familiarity with database systems (SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL)
  • Knowledge of IT security practices, backups, and disaster recovery planning
  • Certifications such as CompTIA Network+, Security+, or AWS Certified SysOps Administrator/CloudOps Engineer are assets.
