Position Summary

The Infection Control Practitioner (ICP) provides Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) consultation to various programs, service departments, health care providers, and physicians. The ICP provides direction to staff regarding appropriate use of barrier precautions and other prevention and control principles to prevent further spread of infection during outbreaks. The ICP participates on various committees including the Infection Prevention and Control Committee, Joint Health & Safety Committees (JHSC), Accreditation, Antibiotic Stewardship Committee and other clinical and quality improvement based working groups. The ICP provides expert IPAC advice related to the impact of floods, sewage spills, discovery of mould, as well as construction, repairs and structural modifications including potential impact for clinical programs. This position uses continuous quality improvement methodology and epidemiological principles in the assigned programs and services across Providence Care.

Education & Experience
  • Registered Nurse or Registered Medical Laboratory Technologist with current registration in good standing
  • Five years of recent experience in clinical/bedside nursing or Laboratory Microbiology in a tertiary care teaching centre, combined with at least two years of experience in the practice of Infection Control in a hospital setting including construction and redevelopment phases of work.
  • Undergraduate or graduate training in Epidemiology, Microbiology or Biostatistics, preferred
  • Infection Control Certification from the Board of Infection Control (CIC) preferred or willing to obtain within three years.
  • Demonstrated experience in role of ICP in providing infection prevention and control input in construction and redevelopment phases of work, preferred
  • Working knowledge of Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and Accreditation Standards
  • Membership in Infection Prevention and Control - Canada (IPAC-Canada)
  • Current Qualified Standard first aid provider (non-RN), or current CPR (HCP) for RN.
Position Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provides consultation and expertise in Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) policy, practice and service to health care professionals and on an individual and systems basis such as sterilization, disinfection and product standardization
  • Maintains a knowledge base of current IPAC information through peer networking, internet access, published literature and professional meetings
  • Participates in hospital and community teams and committees including the product evaluation committee, antibiotic stewardship committee, accreditation committee, community infection prevention partners (CIPP), and regional infection control network hospital working group
  • Provides IPAC expertise to task groups or committees when there are related opportunities to improve quality of care and services
  • Develops and regularly updates policies and procedures within patient/client care settings to support the implementation of IPAC standards, based on current research, and/or recommendations of federal, provincial, international, and/or professional IPAC authorities
  • Works to advance the overall goals and objectives of the IPAC Service, in collaboration with other members of the IPAC Team
