Overview

Position Summary

Northern Health seeks an Indigenous Care Coordinator to join Nats'oojeh Hospital and Health Centre. This positions contributes to the clinical design, implementation, and monitoring of individual Indigenous patient care plans to maximize community support, cultural safety and respectful care for Indigenous patients and families. Working as a member of a multi-disciplinary care team, the coordinator provides services to Indigenous, Métis, and Inuit individuals throughout their engagement with acute and/or primary care services, from intake through post-discharge. The Indigenous Care Coordinator facilitates education for the care team in areas such as local Indigenous services, Indigenous approaches to wellness, trauma-informed care, cultural safety and long-term discharge planning goals. The coordinator collaborates with health care teams in First Nations communities and Métis Chartered communities to coordinate patient care between Northern Health services and community services. The Indigenous Care Coordinator also collaborates with the Indigenous Patient Service Assistant to identify and meet the needs of Indigenous patients and families.

Shift Rotation/Hours of work: Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 16:30

This new state-of-the-art facility is three times the size of the previous hospital and includes 27 beds (18 long-term care and 9 acute-care). It features an expanded emergency department, larger laboratory and diagnostic imaging spaces, and is designed to be welcoming and reflect local Indigenous culture. The facility provides culturally safe care for residents of Fort St. James, surrounding areas, and local Indigenous communities.

Fort St. James is located on the southeast shore of Stuart Lake. The district has a population of approximately 4,500 and features forestry, mining and tourism as main industries. The town offers access to a 300 km network of lakes and rivers and provides good housing and proximity to city amenities. There are two elementary schools and one secondary school.

Qualifications
  • Baccalaureate degree in Social Sciences, Allied Health or a related health care discipline plus two years of experience in a health care setting, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of the unique history, cultures, and rights of First Nations, Metis and Inuit Peoples in Canada is required.
  • Lived experience with Indigenous, Métis and Inuit populations and demonstrated knowledge of First Nations, Métis and Inuit health care needs, services, and issues, as well as knowledge of culture, protocols, traditions, and ideologies of Indigenous people and organizations in northern British Columbia, is an asset.
  • Preference will be given to First Nations, Métis and Inuit candidates.
