More Super Visa Health Insurance Options
On January 28, 2025, the Canadian government updated the health insurance requirements for the Super Visa. This update makes the program more accessible to applicants by allowing coverage from approved foreign providers, in addition to Canadian providers.
In our Canadian immigration blog, we discuss this topic and outline the economic and logistical benefits for families, eligibility requirements, the context behind the change, and the list of approved providers.
Super Visa holders can now purchase health insurance from approved foreign providers. This change offers more flexibility in choosing insurance providers and lowers financial barriers for those facing hardship. The standards of coverage remain the same; applicants can select plans that best suit their needs and budgets.
Previously, applicants faced difficulties finding adequate insurance because they had to purchase exclusively from Canadian providers. Canadian plans can be costly and may exclude coverage for pre-existing conditions, limiting options for affordable and tailored coverage.
Therefore, IRCC relaxed the rule to allow the purchase of private insurance from eligible foreign providers.
This list is updated regularly. Check it before purchasing:
Verify eligibility and purchase a policy that meets IRCC requirements. Consult the OSFI-approved providers list, which is regularly updated, to find the best coverage options.
