Job description

Estates and Succession Lawyer

Salary is based on experience

Our Ottawa client is seeking an Estates and Succession Lawyer to join their team.

Duties:
  • Handle personal tax and estate tax matters, including mental incapacity issues such as guardianship and capacity.
  • Draft Wills and Powers of Attorney for Personal Care and Property.
  • Plan charitable donations, including work with public and private foundations.
  • Administer estates and powers of attorney, including passing of accounts, asset inventory, estate asset distribution, filing documents, interpreting wills and trusts, and executorship duties.
  • Protect minors by appointing guardians and establishing trusts for minor children.
  • Address property issues, including ownership options to meet estate planning goals, and handle litigation or alternative dispute mechanisms related to capacity, estate disputes, and will interpretation.
  • Engage in planning activities such as drafting family trusts, adult trusts, estate freezes, life insurance trusts, spousal trusts, inter vivos trusts, Henson trusts for beneficiaries with special needs, trust variations, multiple Wills, post-mortem tax planning, and trust administration.
  • Assist with succession planning for businesses, including corporate reorganizations, shareholder agreements, use of life insurance, variable share structures, and tax-efficient dispositions.
