Casual English as a Second Language Instructor

The Niagara Catholic District School Board invites applications for the position of Casual English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructor with our Continuing Education Department. Casual ESL Instructors work on a "call as needed" basis, filling in for ESL staff who are away or on leave.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT:
  • Instruct English as a second language, in accordance with curriculum guidelines of the Canadian language Benchmarks
  • Plan and develop daily lessons using appropriate ESL instructing methodologies, strategies and resources that address all language skills
  • Maintain a record of daily classroom activities
  • Incorporate life skills, employable skills and elements of Canadian culture throughout lesson plans
  • Adapt strategies to accommodate continuous intake, irregular attendance, group and individual learner needs
  • Assess, evaluate and document learner progress in all areas of language skills
  • Collaborate with other ESL Instructors on delivery of instruction
  • Accurately record learner information and attendance on a timely basis, manually and on-line
WHAT YOU BRING:
  • University Degree in a related field
  • TESL Ontario Certification
  • Some experience teaching ESL or LINC in Canada, or EFL abroad, or such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may deem appropriate and acceptable
  • Knowledge of the principles of adult ESL teaching methodology and strategies
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to develop and deliver ESL lessons in accordance with program guidelines
  • Proficiency in teaching reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar and pronunciation to adult learners at various levels
  • Flexibility to adapt to a continuous intake environment
  • Clear speech with clear pronunciation
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural and multi-racial environment with respect and sensitivity towards all learners
  • Strong communication skills, which includes computer proficiency
  • A high level of interpersonal skills to work effectively in a team environment
  • Proficiency in online/virtual teaching platforms suitable for ESL instruction, if required

HOURS: Various, as needed on a casual/supply basis

LOCATION: Must be able to travel to all locations within the Niagara Catholic District jurisdiction

RATE OF PAY: $44.05 per hour inclusive of vacation pay and statutory holidays as per the C.U.P.E. Collective Agreement
