As a Sr Electronic Design Engineer, you will leverage your engineering expertise to analyze, recommend, and develop cutting-edge design solutions that consistently exceed customer expectations. You will spearhead interdisciplinary projects of varying complexity, ensuring they meet specifications, timelines, and budgetary goals. Your work will encompass the design and development of electronic control PCBA’s, as well as electro-mechanical and electro-optical systems.

Here’s what you’ll do:

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work seamlessly with a diverse team, including R&D, manufacturing, quality, purchasing, and marketing, to achieve project goals.
  • Technical Design and Testing: Partner with technical teams to design, fabricate, integrate, and test electronic systems, ensuring alignment with product and schedule requirements.
  • Detailed Circuit Design: Conduct comprehensive design, development, and documentation of complex electronic circuits and systems, including:
    • Printed circuit board design (component selection, schematic capture, layout, testing)
    • Integration and testing of electronic sub-systems
    • Microcontroller firmware design, implementation, and documentation
  • Documentation and Testing: Generate detailed schematics, assembly drawings, procedures, timing diagrams, and operational descriptions. Develop test protocols for various product development phases, including manufacturing.
  • Vendor Interaction: Initiate and manage vendor contacts, assisting purchasing in evaluating and selecting vendors for tooling, fabricated parts, and components.
  • Design Review: Serve as an independent reviewer in electronic design evaluations of complex systems and circuits.
  • Project Management: Engage in project planning and execution, including timeline and cost estimations.
  • Verification and Validation: Participate in the verification and validation of equipment and designs.
  • Interdisciplinary Coordination: Collaborate with mechanical engineering, software, purchasing, manufacturing, quality, marketing, and electrical engineering teams.
  • External Interaction: Engage with printed circuit board vendors, electronic distributors, manufacturers, and regulatory agencies.
  • Onsite Collaboration: As part of our lean R&D team, onsite work in our Halifax office during regular hours is essential for collaborative success.
  • Travel Opportunities: Occasional travel may be required to other ZEISS locations, including Oberkochen, Germany and California, USA.

Do you qualify?

  • Educational Background: Degree in electrical engineering, electronics, optoelectronics, or comparable qualification (master’s degree preferred).
  • Professional Experience: Minimum of five years in developing electronic systems for mixed-signal mechatronic products, ideally in medical technology (including one year of project management preferred).
  • Technical Expertise: Strong appreciation for well-specified and documented electronics, with experience in electronic design for manufacturing. Skilled in programmable logic and embedded microprocessor integration. Experience in test and qualification automation.
  • Electronics Design Tools: Proficient in electronic software tools, including ECAD (Pulsonix is an asset) and SPICE.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Exceptional troubleshooting and debugging abilities.
  • Interpersonal Skills and Communication: Enthusiasm for working collaboratively within interdisciplinary teams, fostering a cooperative and productive work environment. Adept at conveying complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Language Skills: Proficiency in English, with basic German language skills considered an asset.
  • Additional Skills: Affinity for embedded software development and familiarity with medical device regulations and electrical safety standards are considered assets.
