POSITION TITLE: Facilities Maintence Technician – Electrician (FMT-E)

LOCATION: Remote Long Range Radar Sites in Arctic Canada

SECURITY CLEARANCE: Secret

POSITION TYPE: Permanent, Unionized, 6x6 Rotation

REPORTS TO: Site Supervisor

NATURE AND SCOPE:

The Facilities Maintenance Technician - Electrician (FMT-E) has functional responsibility for monitoring, maintaining and troubleshooting the serviceability of the facilities, the electrical distribution systems (along with their related equipment) at the NWS Short Range Radar (SRR) and Long-Range Radar (LRR) sites. This includes providing diagnostic, problem solving and repair capabilities.

This position is covered under the provision of the collective agreement with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (I.B.E.W.) Local 2228.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reports and maintains facilities files as related to the NWS work management system, operational field reports, data analysis, etc.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and repair of electrical power transmission and distribution systems, including conductor splicing and terminating, the performance of major and minor repairs to switchgear, circuit breakers, bus bars, bus ducts, power transformers, filters, motors, batteries, rectifiers and associated power components and accessories
  • Assists power plant mechanics in the operation and major maintenance of the prime power plant generating and distribution systems
  • Performs the maintenance and repair of the electrical systems associated with heating, ventilating, refrigeration, food service, laundry, water supply, sewage disposal, fuel dispending, building lighting, airstrip lighting, and electrical fire detection alarm equipment
  • Performs maintenance and repair of all electrical appliances (installed and portable)
  • Performs inspections of electrical equipment, as required
  • Provides training to site mechanics for the operation, maintenance and repairs of all electrical equipment on the site
  • Must be physically fit, to be able to climb towers and pass training for working at heights.
  • Performs other duties assigned by a higher authority, which are unplanned or of a transient nature.

STATEMENT OF QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION / CERTIFICATE(S) / LICENSE(S):

  • A qualified/licensed journeyman and post journeyman experience as an Industrial Electrician.
  • A valid driver’s license.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum 5 years’ proven journeyman experience in an industrial environment.
  • Due to the multi-disciplinary nature of the position, previous industrial mechanical maintenance experience, preferably in power plant operation, would also be an asset.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Must be familiar with programmable logic controllers, diesel generators, switchgear and distribution systems, and safety regulations and practices.
  • Knowledge or experience with Fire Detection and Fire Suppression systems would be an asset.

COMPETENCIES / SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Solid communication and computer skills (MS Word and Excel).
  • Requires ability to adapt to changing tasks and locations.
  • Ability to integrate successfully into a small, multi-cultural and team-oriented department
  • Ability to travel as part of a small team to adjacent sites to perform functions
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), as required
  • Ability to work under physically demanding, often adverse weather conditions in remote Arctic locations
