Job description
Overview

This position is located in Inuvik, NT

To perform senior level work in the maintenance, diagnosis and repair of electrical generation and control equipment, along with auxiliary equipment such as electric motors, transformers, relays, electronic governors, voltage regulators, and other NTPC electrical systems in diesel, gas, wind, solar, battery energy storage systems and /or hydro generating stations. All work shall be carried out in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code and NTPC policies and standards.

Responsibilities
  • Provides expert technical advice in troubleshooting electrical equipment, devices, and control systems to determine causes of malfunctions and initiates repairs or recommends action in accordance with good trade practices.
  • Performs operational checks, installs and testing on new, modified and existing equipment such as protective relays, VFD drives, and interconnected PLC systems as directed.
  • Travels to remote satellite plants as required to complete electrical equipment repairs or inspections and provides guidance to the journeyman electrician in completing electrical maintenance and repairs on Corporation buildings within the region.
  • Upgrades electrical drawings and technical information, maintains accurate records of completed work, provides written reports of activities,
  • Maintains and completes regular inspections of the wind turbine according to the manufacturer’s recommended procedures including routine maintenance tasks to ensure the reliable and efficient operation of wind turbines. This includes inspecting, cleaning, and lubricating mechanical components, checking electrical systems, and identifying any signs of wear or damage.
  • Serves as the coordinator of support with OEM and troubleshooting and complete repairs of the wind Turbine including diagnosing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues that may arise in wind turbines, identify the root causes of problems and perform repairs to get the turbines back in operation.
  • Complete safety checks and training to support on-going maintenance of the wind turbine by ensuring that all safety protocols and procedures are followed during maintenance and repair activities. Be trained to work safely at heights, in transformer and around moving parts to minimize the risk of accidents.
  • Have technical knowledge and experience to complete regular inspections and maintenance of solar panels, inverters, and other necessary electrical components, ensuring all connections are secure and following best utility practices and are operating efficiently and safely.
  • Other duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Electrical Technologist certification (preferably in the field of power generation) WITH at least 5 years experience in all types of electrical test equipment, AND A minimum of 5 years experience troubleshooting diesel or gas genset electrical systems including the ability to set electronic governors and voltage regulators unsupervised in the field. Must have experience of setting up electronic governors for parallel operation.Utility and/or power plant experience is required. Equivalencies may be considered.
  • Must be eligible for registration as a CET in Canada.
  • Electrical Journeyperson experience would be an asset.
  • Must possess a strong willingness to learn and adapt to working on wind turbines, solar installations and battery energy storage systems. This includes a proactive approach to gaining the necessary technical knowledge and hands‑on experience to effectively operate, maintain, and troubleshoot advanced renewable energy technologies. The candidate should be eager to participate in training programs, stay updated with industry advancements, and continuously improve their skills to ensure optimal performance and safety standards in the field.
  • Experience in SCADA, PLC (Allen Bradley and ComAp experience preferred), LAN, and Auto CADD systems would be a definite asset.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with minimum direct supervision.
  • Ability to interpret and utilize manufacturer’s Manuals and Parts Books.
  • Demonstrated good oral and written communication skills to maintain effective communications with team members, and to prepare documentation and reports.
  • Good analytical skills and the ability to diagnose electrical problems and propose solutions.
  • Good working knowledge of safety regulations and procedures.
  • Computer skills to operate a variety of software related to financial, administrative and reporting systems, electronic mail, internet, etc..
  • Must have a valid Class 5 driver’s license.
  • Satisfactory criminal record check must be provided.

Salary for this position ranges from $54.10/hr - $65.72/hr, plus an additional location allowance of $11,808 per annum. We offer a comprehensive benefits package which includes health and dental benefits, long-term disability, life insurance, paid sick days and a defined benefits pension plan. Relocation assistance may be provided. Please note this is NOT a fly-in/rotational position -- it does require the successful candidate to relocate to/live in Inuvik, NT.
