Salary
  • Developmental Support Worker (DSW) – Casual Rate: $28.58, Temporary/Term/Permanent Rate: $31.98 – $33.35
  • Intervention Support Worker (ISW) – Casual Rate: $28.58, Temporary/Term/Permanent Rate: $37.17 – $38.50

You may be considered for temporary and/or permanent opportunities as they arise throughout the year for Developmental Support Worker and Intervention Support Worker positions.

Positions Overview
  • Casual Positions: On‑call, as‑needed basis to cover absences of permanent employees ranging from daily occurrences up to 30 consecutive working days.
  • Temporary Positions: Available for a period in excess of 30 consecutive working days to replace a permanent employee on approved leave (e.g., pregnancy, parental, educational or medical leave).
  • Permanent Positions: Full‑time positions (35 hours per week).

We require staff with a desire to provide quality service and programs to York Region students. Educational Assistants must be flexible, prepared to take on multiple challenges, and capable of attending to students’ physical needs (toileting, lifting, feeding, physical intervention).

Position Summary

Responsible for providing direct care and support to students with complex needs, including those with physical, safety, medical, behavioral, cognitive, and learning needs, in compliance with board policies and procedures. Together with the classroom teacher, team, and/or resource staff, take actions to improve educational outcomes, promote inclusivity, and integrate students through accommodations and best practices.

Major Responsibilities
  • Provide direct management and support of individual student needs through intervention, data collection, observation, case conferences, and creation/implementation of personalized resources.
  • Provide direct personal and medical care per the student’s IEP and Safety Plan, including medication administration, feeding, dressing, toileting, catheterization, hygiene, lifting and positioning, and mobility assistance.
  • Maintain a safe learning environment by responding immediately to escalated situations or safety risks.
  • Participate in development, implementation, and monitoring of student support strategies and programs (Growth Plans, IEPs, Safety Plans, etc.).
  • Provide behavioral and safety interventions using CPI principles and the Memo on Unsafe Student Behavior.
  • Develop and prepare materials that promote integration, participation, and knowledge transfer. Collaborate with teams to demonstrate and facilitate enhancement of student learning.
  • Supervise, support, and assist individuals or groups of students during classroom activities, recess, lunch, before/after school, field trips, and other situations, including travel needs.
  • Collaborate with regional board supports and community agencies on interventions (e.g., Mediation, Circle Solutions, Applied Behavior Analysis, CPI).
  • Participate in case‑management sessions and In‑School Team Meetings, and collaborate with school and system staff.
  • Attend meetings, professional development, and training sessions as required.
  • Cover breaks, lunches, and unfilled vacancies of other non‑teaching staff as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Line of Responsibility
  • Responsible to the School Principal or designated person for school‑based staff.
  • Responsible to the Student Services Coordinator or designated person for regional staff.
Education, Experience, And Qualifications
  • Secondary School Graduation Diploma with at least two years of post‑secondary education in a related field.
  • Minimum of one year of related experience (two years for positions with complex social‑emotional, mental health, or behavioral concerns).
  • Training in de‑escalation strategies (including CPI certification where required), feeding, toileting, lifting, and positioning techniques.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication, interpersonal skills, and ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
Additional Information
  • Employees are expected to work at least 30 days within the current school year to remain on the casual Educational Assistant list.
  • Hours may start as early as 7:30 a.m. and end as late as 4:30 p.m.; employees are encouraged to accept as many shifts as possible.
