Early Childhood Educator Assistant

Department: Education – M’Chigeeng Binoojiinh Gamgoohs/ Early Years Learning Centre

Classification/Level: $21.84 - $25.20 + $2.00 Wage enhancement (Pending Funding Support Approval- Annual)

Employment Status: On-call Casual

Reporting Relationship

The Early Childhood Educator Assistant will work under the direction of the – M’Chigeeng Binoojiinh Gamgoohs ECE Educator and reports to the Early Years Learning Centre supervisor.

Position Summary

The Early Childhood Educator Assistant is responsible for the provision of classroom support/ enhanced staffing.

Essential Functions
  • Provide an environment with experiences that foster the development of children enrolled; (i.e., social, emotional, physical, and intellectual)
  • Use various teaching techniques including modelling, observing, questioning, demonstrating, and reinforcing.
  • Respond to children in a positive tone of voice.
  • Prepare classroom displays and bulletin boards; assist classroom educators with weekly planning.
  • Will be utilized to assist in maintaining child/staff ratios at all times.
Under the guidance of the lead educator
  • Implement a schedule that incorporates child directed activities, care routines and transition times.
  • Participate in development and implementation of programs to enhance creativity, arts and crafts, dramatic play, emotional awareness, music appreciation, science, fine and gross motor and sensory activities.
  • Provide positive pro-social experiences including sharing, cooperation, and respect for others.
  • Plan and carry out activities that encourage problem solving.
  • Complete any required records (daily charts, attendance of children)
  • Diaper and/ or toilet train children as required, instruct, assist children washing, dressing, toileting, eating – to develop self-help skills
  • Assist in general housekeeping of playrooms and other areas as required
  • Demonstrated a strong sense of teamwork
  • Attend workshops/ meetings as required and participate in professional development learning
Qualifications & Requirements

Preferred: College Diploma in related field of education or equivalent or social services with a minimum of one year work experience

Minimum: Work or volunteer related experience with the completion of a secondary school diploma or equivalent

Other: Good rapport with young people, First Aid Certificate

Good interpersonal skills, dependable, reliable and willingness to work in cooperation within a strong team environment

Must have knowledge and/or experience with the culture, history and customs of the Anishnaabe

Understanding and fluency in Anishinabemowin is a strong asset; or must be willing to learn the language

CRC/VSS Rationale: M’Chigeeng First Nation and its agents are in a position of trust in services to band member children and/or vulnerable adults, so a safe and secure working environment is mandatory. Applicants must provide a clear VSS Certificate and the VSS must have a record clear and/or dated of any convictions relating to alcohol, drugs, assault, violence and theft. The VSS must be current (30 days) and must be an Original.
