Overview

GEM Health Care Group has been operating in Atlantic Canada since 1979 in the Seniors' Healthcare sector. We are a leader in diversity and inclusion, and our team continues to grow. The Director of Care (DOC) is responsible for the coordination of all health services at the facility to ensure that all aspects of resident health are developed, planned, implemented, evaluated and are consistent with the mission and values of GEM Health Care Group. As the leader of the Health Care Services Department, the DOC oversees the disciplines of nursing, occupational therapy and physiotherapy.

Responsibilities
  • Work closely with other senior management to ensure that the policies and procedures of each department in the facility complement nursing requirements, dietary plans and recreation plans
  • Assist in the negotiation of Collective Agreements as well as other union procedures when required
  • Participate in the recruitment and orientation process for Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Dieticians, nursing staff and administrative staff positions
  • Maintain an inventory control system to ensure that all provisions, drug and medical supplies, and materials are adequately accounted for to ensure their proper care and use
  • Encourage staff learning, research and self development to not only motivate staff but to benefit the facility residents
  • Participate in the review of all risk management issues as they relate to health care services, such as incident reports review and medication errors
  • Develop partnerships and linkages with the community to ensure that the facility is planning services to meet the changing needs of an aging population
Qualifications
  • Basic Requirements: Registered Nurse in the Province of Nova Scotia
  • Minimum 5 years management experience in a long term care setting
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written in English
  • Highly organized and detail oriented
  • Financial management and budgeting skills
  • Strong computer literacy and technical skills, more specifically Microsoft and electronic documentation platforms
  • Flexible leadership style and coaching skills to support and empower staff
