Position Conditions

This full-time, permanent position of 40 hours per week will be offered in accordance with conditions identified in the Collective Agreement between the City of Brandon and the Brandon Police Association. This opportunity is open to all applicants; however, first consideration may be given to current BPA members. The City of Brandon reserves the right to underfill this position.

NOTE: Successful applicants must obtain satisfactory results from a criminal background investigation.

Rate of Pay

$85,440.26 – $93,470.36 per year (2025 Rates)

This competition will include testing and an interview.

Purpose of Position

The successful candidate can expect a dynamic environment, which requires the use of specialized software and hardware to examine various digital devices to support investigations. The Digital Forensics Specialist conducts forensic examinations of computer systems, mobile devices, cellular phones, gaming consoles, GPS, and other data storage devices and will work in conjunction and as part of a team with investigators and Crown Counsel in gathering evidence to support criminal investigations. The Digital Forensics Specialist will be required to prepare reports detailing the findings of those examinations in accordance with policy and will be required to provide testimony relating to those reports and evidence gathered.

In addition, the Digital Forensics Specialist shall in the performance of duties, respect and protect human dignity and maintain and uphold the human rights of all persons, ensure that health and safety programs are applied in accordance with City of Brandon policy and shall be responsible for adherence to generally accepted safe work practices within the Police Service.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct forensic examinations of seized computer systems, data storage devices, mobile devices, and any other portable devices which store electronic data.
  • Remove, identify, and replace computer hardware components from seized devices to facilitate forensic examination.
  • Ensure that seized digital media devices which store electronic data are properly handled to facilitate a forensic examination, including proper storage and preservation of data and forensic images.
  • Responsible for concise reporting and court preparation on any digital forensic examinations.
  • Assist in the execution of search warrants as required to preview and seize computers, data storage devices and other electronic storage media, including systems in a network configuration and preparing complete and accurate documents for the court and other hearings.
  • Provide evidence related to any investigative assistance in regards to digital forensic examination.
  • Communicate with members of the public, members of this and other law enforcement agencies including the crown attorney’s office to ensure a close and effective working relationship.
  • Maintain all network and computer equipment and software assigned to the unit.
  • Provide assistance to Police members investigating computer and internet related crimes.
  • Research and purchase hardware and software tools to improve the function of the unit.
  • Provide support, education, assistance, leadership, and training to the team and to other members within the service and community.
  • Attend meetings, sit on boards/committees, and attend speaking engagements as required.
  • Remain current with mobile and computer operating systems, software applications, tools and techniques. Provide recommendations for available training opportunities to supervisors.
  • Develop and modify software scripts to analyze unsupported applications or file types when required.
  • Maintain databases regarding the categorization of explicit child sexual exploitation and abuse materials.
  • Maintain data integrity as well as the backup and restoration of all investigative data.
  • Participate in the hiring process of new members.
  • Work with confidential information in order to preserve, collect and present technological evidence as it relates to Criminal Code offences before the courts, including updating of reports for disclosure.
  • Follow the safety and security procedures in performing the duties of this job.
  • Perform other duties as directed, required, or assigned by the Chief of Police or designate.

Mandatory Qualifications & Experience
  • Grade 12, G.E.D., C.A.E.C., or Mature High School Diploma
  • Minimum of six (6) months experience working in a computer-based environment
  • Post-Secondary Education with related Degree or Diploma
  • Knowledge of various file system structures including FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, HFS+, APFS, ext3, and ext4
  • Experience with a variety of operating systems such as Windows, Linux, Mac OS, iOS, and Android OS
  • Familiarity with the Windows Registry
Preferred Qualifications & Experience
  • Current COMPTIA A+ Certification
  • Current COMPTIA NET+ and or Security+ Certifications
  • Experience with Forensic tools such as Cellebrite, Magnet Forensics, X-Ways, and/or FTK Imager
  • Any current forensic certification such as CMFF, CCO, CCPA, CCME, MCFE etc.
  • Any recognized IT certifications such as MTA, MCSE, MCSD etc.
