Overview

DevOps Specialist — OpenShift Lead (Contract)

Location: Edmonton, AB (Remote-first within Canada; onsite on reasonable notice). Category: Information Technology (Technical). Engagement: Full-time contract. Apply by: September 5, 2025. Anticipated interviews: September 22–26, 2025.

The Project: Join a large provincial digital delivery program modernizing services for citizens using human-centred design, agile delivery, and modern data practices. You’ll help operate and evolve enterprise OpenShift platforms (cloud & on-prem) that power multiple ministries, while uplifting DevOps automation for legacy and modern teams.

The Role: Own day-to-day platform operations, lead infrastructure initiatives (cluster builds / expansions), and drive automation and CI / CD at scale. Collaborate with internal teams and vendors, improve observability and reliability, and champion security best practices across environments.

What you’ll do
  • Operate & optimize OpenShift (cloud + on-prem): capacity, performance, reliability, and upgrades.
  • Architect large-scale changes: cluster rebuilds, expansions, migrations, DR / HA.
  • Automation at scale: build / reinforce CI / CD and platform automation (e.g., Ansible, Helm, Terraform).
  • Security by default: implement RBAC, encryption, patching cadence, image hygiene, and compliance guardrails.
  • Provisioning & lifecycle: automate cluster / app provisioning, scaling, and rolling updates.
  • Observability: create scripts / dashboards; monitor cluster & app health; tune for performance.
  • Resilience: implement backups and disaster recovery plans; validate regularly.
  • Incident response: L1 triage / coordination, root-cause analysis, production readiness.
  • DevOps enablement: promote best practices, support BuildMaster upgrades / maintenance, and assist other container-based solutions (e.g., GitHub ARC).
  • Cross-team collaboration: work with platform, security, app, and vendor teams to deliver reliably and fast.
What you bring
  • 8+ years in DevOps / SRE or Platform Engineering, including 3–5+ years leading Kubernetes / OpenShift platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience with OpenShift administration (operators, routes, networking, storage, cluster upgrades).
  • Strong IaC & automation: Ansible, Terraform, Helm, shell / Python scripting, and CI / CD pipelines.
  • Solid grasp of Linux, container runtime fundamentals, and networking (ingress, service meshes, TLS).
  • Proven track record in security hardening (RBAC, secrets, image policies), backup / DR, and HA architectures.
  • Experience collaborating with vendors and multi-disciplinary internal teams in regulated / enterprise environments.
  • Clear communication, documentation, and stakeholder alignment skills.
  • Eligible to work in Canada; able to attend onsite sessions in Edmonton with notice.
Security & Compliance
  • Criminal Record Check may be required.
  • Teams supporting justice-related work may require Enhanced Security Clearance; some teams may require eligibility for higher-level clearances.
Contract & Hours
  • Hours / week: ~36.25 (7.25 / day), standard business hours.
  • Timesheets: Monthly.
  • Estimated term: ~1,798 hours across 2–3 concurrent projects (actuals may vary by project needs).
  • Work model: Remote-first in Canada; onsite meetings / work sessions in Edmonton with reasonable notice.
  • Travel: Up to ~15% in-province as needed.
  • Equipment: BYOD compatible with access requirements; collaboration via Microsoft Teams (Zoom as needed).
