Overview

Job Description Summary: The Planning, Analytics, and Institutional Research Office (PAIR) provides leadership and direction to enhance the coordination of institutional data and analysis across the UBC system, providing optimal support to UBC executive, Faculties, staff, government and external partners. The PAIR office leverages data and analytics to guide university-wide planning and decision-making, to support integrated university planning, to strengthen student learning and experiences, and to promote a deeper understanding of the nature and quality of education at UBC.

Under the direction of the Research & Analytics Leads and the Associate Directors, the Data & Reporting Analyst supports a variety of institutional research functions and projects concerning student enrolment, organizational activity, surveys, and data exchanges. The incumbent will participate in a number of projects providing analytical support to project teams. The Data & Reporting Analyst will actively demonstrate the PAIR team’s commitment to service, quality, integrity, and collaboration, fostering a culture of excellence in data analysis and reporting.

Organizational Status

This position has a functional reporting line to the Research & Analytics Lead while engaging in collaborative, project-specific reporting and responsibilities as defined by the Research & Analytics Leads and Associate Directors. This position operates within a project-based matrix structure. Under the direction of the Research & Analytics Lead(s), the Data & Reporting Analyst may work on their own or participate in projects as part of a team of analysts.

Work Performed
  • Collect, analyze and present quantitative and qualitative data and other information in support of the unit’s activities.
  • Support the planning and implementation of research projects and proposals, surveys, analytical tool development, and technical assistance to facilitate planning, budgeting, accountability, program evaluation, and development of policy decisions.
  • Respond to ad hoc inquiries by providing accurate and insightful statistical analysis for various internal and external stakeholders.
  • Synthesize and interpret research findings related to institutional metrics and trends to inform policy and strategic initiatives.
  • Provide benchmarking and other comparative data to facilitate decision-making.
  • Stay updated on emerging methodologies and practices in institutional research and higher education analytics.
  • Develop and implement dashboards and visualizations for effective communication of complex data insights.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgment

Outputs are reviewed by Research & Analytics Leads and/or Associate Directors and inform key policy, planning and resource allocation decisions. Errors in analysis, reporting, or judgment could have significant consequences, including misinformed policy decisions, financial losses, and reputational damage. The Data & Reporting Analysts must work with precision and ensure all outputs are thoroughly validated to maintain trust and reliability in institutional data.

Supervision

This position works under the direction of the Research & Analytics Lead(s). While tasks are assigned by Research and Analytics Lead(s) or Associate Directors, the position requires significant independence in carrying out responsibilities. This position may also work in collaboration and/or receive direction from the Research Analysts and/or Senior Research Analysts. The analyses produced will be reviewed by the Research & Analytics Lead(s), Associate Directors, or other members of the team.

Supervision Given

This role does not include direct supervisory responsibilities but may involve providing guidance to team members on specific projects or processes. May direct the work of student employees, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Minimum of two years\' experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline with a focus on social science research or quantitative analysis preferred. Minimum of two years of experience in research, data analysis, or related fields, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated quantitative and qualitative analytical skills in managing large amounts of data accurately and efficiently. Demonstrated proficiency in a variety of data analysis tools and software. For example, MS Excel, R, Python, SPSS, Tableau, etc. Strong skills in data visualization and communication through charts, graphs, and other formats. Familiarity with key data sources such as Statistics Canada and provincial education data repositories. Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and multitasking abilities. Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment. Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of work.
