The Cultural Support Worker contributes to the Wellness Team through health advocacy, prevention, and promotion, and works under the supervision of the Community Wellness Coordinator. The main purpose is to promote healthy traditional practices and assist the Witatoskimitotan, Mitho-Pimatisiwin by providing cultural programming within the PBCN community. This position requires living a healthy lifestyle and being familiar with Woodland Cree traditions and culture.
The community of Sandy Bay, Sask is seeking one position. The Cultural Support Worker is a permanent full-time position.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Assisting Witatoskimitotan, Mitho-Pimatisiwin staff in the delivery of services including but are not limited to promotion, and prevention.
- Assist with land-based education and learning.
- Assisting the elderly and disabled to live independently at home as long as possible by providing transportation for shopping, chopping wood, shoveling snow, hunting and gathering food, and referral to other health care professionals as necessary.
- Works closely with the Witatoskimitotan, Mitho-Pimatisiwin by assisting in home visits, providing support, awareness, reinforce teaching, interpreting and advising.
- Act as an interpreter between English and Cree speaking clients, health care providers, and accompany clients when necessary to appointments.
- Assist in planning and organizing events such as cultural camps, hunting & gathering, planting and harvesting community gardens, berry-picking expeditions, trips and traditional outings for the members.
- Engages families and community members in basic life skills from a traditional perspective.
- Report directly to the Community Wellness Coordinator.
- Complete intakes for the Community Cultural Activities.
- Ensure that parental and caregiver consent forms are obtained for programming activities.
- Ensure that participants complete waiver forms.
- Complete monthly reports.
- Assist in developing and implementing the community wellness workplan.
- Implement the community wellness workplan.
- When required attend Community Advisory Committee meetings to provide a report and updates.
- Notify the coordinator about required supplies, materials, and equipment for programming, activities.
- Ensure that planned cultural activities or sites are prepared and delivered.
- Maintain an inventory of supplies, ensure that goods and equipment are secure and maintained.
Qualifications
- Minimum Grade 10 (combination of education and relevant experience may be considered).
- Must possess knowledge of and experience with Woodland Cree culture and traditions.
- Must possess the ability to speak and understand the Cree Language.
- Ability to work within multidisciplinary team.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Must have a valid Class 5 Driver’s License and be able to travel Outlying PBCN communities.
- Must provide a clear Police Records Check – Vulnerable Sector Check.
- Must provide a clear Child Welfare Check.
- Must provide a Class 5 Saskatchewan Driver’s License.
