Toyota Canada Inc. currently has an exciting opportunity for an experienced communicator in our External Affairs department. This is a full-time opportunity and will report to the Manager, Corporate Communications. The selected candidate will plan and coordinate the company’s national social contribution programs. The role also leads proactive PR and communications activities – including events – to build corporate and brand reputation with a variety of key stakeholders.

What You’ll Be Doing

Social Contribution – Corporate

  • Plan and execute Toyota Canada’s corporate social contribution (community investment) programs/initiatives
  • Responsible for the communication of the company’s social contribution activities

Social Contribution – Toyota Canada Foundation

  • Plan and execute the Toyota Canada Foundation’s programs and initiatives
  • Responsible for the communication of the Foundation’s social contribution activities

Event Planning and Execution

  • Plan and execute significant media/PR/communications/social contribution events for key stakeholders
  • Ensure events advance TCI’s brands, thought leadership, business priorities and key messaging

Brand PR – Toyota and Lexus Brands

  • Work closely with the Brand Marketing teams (Toyota and Lexus) to support and leverage brand activity
  • Seek, develop and deliver opportunities to build TCI’s brands through communications and PR activity

Media Relations

  • Proactively seek, develop and pitch positive stories related to brand initiatives and social contribution at TCI to earn media coverage using various tools (events, stunts, surveys, media releases, etc.)
  • Coordinate messaging for – and preparation of – corporate spokespersons, as required

Communications Material Development

  • Write, edit and proofread materials for a variety of audiences (key messages, Q&A, fact sheets, media releases, social media messaging, internal communications messaging, speeches, web site content, presentations, etc.)
  • Provide direction for supporting agencies and suppliers, as required
  • Support Manager with issues management and reactive media relations, as required

Planning and Reporting

  • Work with the team to propose, coordinate and track the Corporate Communications budget
  • Work with Corporate Communications Manager with strategic planning to meet department objectives
  • Work with Corporate Communications Manager to prepare reports and proposals for Senior Management
What You’ll Bring
  • University degree, preferably in Public Relations or Communications
  • 5-10 years of communications and/or public relations experience, preferably in a corporate environment (ideally, including media relations, brand PR, events and community investment)
  • A genuine passion for community and an understanding of the important role of NGOs and other not-for-profits
  • Solid understanding of how social contribution, brand PR & communications contribute to corporate reputation
  • Strong sense of ownership and personal responsibility for corporate and brand reputation
  • High degree of tact, diplomacy and professionalism, as well as extremely strong relationship‑building, interpersonal and verbal communication skills
  • Comfort working with a variety of stakeholders, including senior executives, media and community groups
  • Experience planning and managing significant (and successful) corporate events
  • A nose for news and the ability to see PR opportunities when others might not
  • The ability to creatively leverage and pitch PR opportunities to maximize earned media coverage
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to produce high quality content while managing multiple projects
  • Excellent writing skills with an ability to simplify concepts and tailor messaging to specific audiences
  • Strong editing and proofreading skills
  • Experience working or volunteering with NGOs/not‑for‑profit organizations is a definite asset
  • Journalism experience is a definite asset
  • Written and spoken French is an asset
