Role and Responsibilities
This position is responsible for all reporting and accounting functions related to assigned client engagements. The Controller can manage day-to-day activities with limited supervision and guidance from the Account Manager.
- Install, design and set up basic small business accounting software.
- Establish and implement basic accounting procedures.
- Supervise the Staff Accountant on the account and provide necessary guidance and training, including:
- Processing day-to-day transactions including A/R, A/P, payroll and benefits, and banking.
- Preparation of all government returns (GST, HST, ETD, WSIB, EHT, T4s, T4As, T5s, etc.).
- In very limited cases, may be responsible for these duties to cover Staff Accountant’s absence, during startup and transition periods.
- Analyze and reconcile accounts and prepare reconciliations in complex situations.
- Monitor and manage cash flow; prepare budgets and forecasts.
- Interact with clients’ year-end accountants and government auditors.
- Prepare and analyze monthly and yearly financial statements and related working papers.
- Interact with clients to ensure financial statements are accurate and provide explanation and analysis as required.
- Assist with scheduling issues and performance evaluations of Staff Accountants.
Job Requirements
- Advanced knowledge of accounting consistent with near completion of the CPA program (can be learned through formal courses or on the job).
- Knowledge of office/accounting systems, procedures and document flows with at least five years of experience in an accounting office environment.
- Interpersonal skills that build client confidence in delivering a quality product and that staff feel positive about their role.
- Communication skills to identify, analyze, and implement solutions in all but complex situations; for complex situations, ability to work with Account Managers to provide solutions.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple clients; ability to multi-task and prioritize.
- Computer skills to learn new programs rapidly and teach staff (e.g., Sage 50, QuickBooks, MYOB, Sage 300, Business Vision, Excel, Internet Banking, Payroll Systems).
- Ability to work independently in environments with a high degree of isolation.
- Proactive in establishing procedures and providing instructions.
- Ability to take ownership of day-to-day responsibilities for all assigned client engagements.
- Positive attitude and professional demeanor.
- Ability to work consistently toward objectives, possibly requiring extra hours and effort.
- Willingness to lead by example.
