Job summary

A leading educational institution in Victoria seeks a Plant Mechanic to perform journeyperson or technician level skills across various trades. You will be responsible for the fabrication, installation, alteration, and repair of mechanical systems, including those for heating/cooling. Successful candidates will have a Red Seal qualification, strong HVAC experience, and excellent problem-solving abilities. The position requires strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment. Willingness to work shifts is necessary.

Qualifications

  • 5 years at the journeyperson/technician level in applicable trade preferably in an institutional environment.
  • Extensive institutional HVAC experience or equivalent.
  • Ammonia plant experience desirable.

Job description

As stewards of the campus, Facilities Management fosters and enriches an inviting and functional environment that welcomes and supports all who come here. Facilities Management clients include faculty, staff and students. As part of Facilities Management the Mechanical Shop reflects high service delivery standards and requirements. The team works together to ensure effective, efficient and safe performance for the operation, maintenance and repair of building systems on campus.

Under general supervision, the Plant Mechanic will provide journeyperson or technician level skills in any one of the following trades: machinist, pipe/steam fitter, millwright (industrial mechanic), power engineer (min 3rd class), pipefitter/welder (pressure), or refrigeration/air conditioning or other similar trade or technical qualification suitable to UVic Facilities Management as defined by the Industrial Training Authority of BC (ITA), BC Safety Authority and/or recognized licensing or training institutions. The Plant Mechanic will fabricate, install, alter, repair and/or service any plant mechanical system or equipment designed for the purposes of heating and/or cooling (transfer of heat energy) or other mechanical or hydraulic energy. Includes work such as piping, gas-fitting, controls and electrical work related to this classification of equipment and where licensed and qualified by the relevant jurisdiction(s) as having authority to do this work.

Regulated work shall be performed only by incumbents holding required qualifications. The incumbent also performs related duties of similar scope and complexity in collaboration or independently within a multidisciplinary shop and full service facilities department which provides such services as plant and facilities engineering maintenance services. The incumbent will also assist in emergent situations, as reasonably declared by employer, within the physical and skill capacity of the individual. Shall conform to all best practices in relation to UVic, regulated and industry standards of work and behaviors, including compliance to Worksafe BC regulations.

  • Ability to use initiative and varied trade skills in diagnosing and effecting repairs.
  • Ability to carry out an effective work schedule, under general supervision and utilize materials and equipment for maximum benefit.
  • Ability to plan and organize work efficiently.
  • Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, staff and students.
  • Ability to operate and maintain control systems.
  • Literate in the use of personal computers and the MS office suite.
  • Ability to use resources and supplies in an efficient and cost effective manner.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and oral.
  • Ability to use hand and fixed power tools effectively (both fixed and portable) i.e. tools associated with mechanical trades including multi meters and other diagnostic equipment.
  • Competency in soldering, brazing, tack and cutting (with torch or electric).
Specialized Knowledge/Education
  • Completion of an approved apprenticeship or training program acceptable to employer.
  • Millwright (Industrial Mechanic); Pipe/steam Fitter; Power Engineering 3rd Class; Pipefitter/Welder (Pressure) or Refrigeration & A/C Mechanic TQ or related mechanical trade or occupation within HVAC industry.
  • Extensive institutional HVAC experience or equivalent.
  • Ammonia plant experience desirable.
For All Crafts
  • BC or IP Red Seal Trade or Certificate of Qualification.
  • Valid British Columbia driver's license.
  • Good physical health, sufficient strength, stamina and coordination to perform a variety of routine heavy manual and machine operation tasks continuously.
Experience

5 years at the journeyperson/technician level in applicable trade preferably in an institutional environment.

Additional Requirements
  • Willingness and ability to work any recognized shift including weekends.
  • May be required to assist with departmental response to emergent and safety related concerns.
