We are currently seeking a Consulting Technical Director, Scientist to join our team in Vancouver, BC, Calgary AB, Ottawa ON, Toronto, ON, or one of our other Canadian offices. Applicants may be based remotely but should be willing to travel occasionally to one of ERM’s offices or to a client site, as needed. The successful candidate will work on a variety of interesting environmental assessments for mining, power and oil & gas development projects throughout all regions of Canada.

The primary emphasis is to be the technical lead for the human health risk assessment component of environmental assessments for sites throughout Canada. This posting is designed for a senior practitioner who is capable of independent problem-solving. This is ideal for a candidate who has progressed in their technical skills and is ready for the transition into a senior leadership role that focuses on client-facing problem solving and providing input to technical leads about how to best integrate human health risk assessment into environmental assessment projects. This is a specialist role with a compensation package that will be commensurate with that specialist contribution.

ERM is also open to hearing from more senior candidates who are interested in a part-time or on-call senior technical role.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide technical expertise to expand our human health risk assessment services and client base in Canada as it relates to environmental assessment projects. Be accountable for the technical quality of all human health modeling and reporting deliverables.
  • Provide technical input and guidance to junior team members and build an effective team of scientists to execute on a growing portfolio of projects.
  • Lead preparation of technical proposals, including development of technical scopes and cost estimates, and participate in business development with existing clients and identified leads.
  • Support engagement activities with regulators, Indigenous groups, communities, and stakeholders as part of broader project teams.
  • Develop recommendations for clients related to effective long-term monitoring and compliance with permit conditions related to human health risk assessment.
  • Collaborate effectively in multi-disciplinary teams with other ERM subject matter experts to integrate our different types of work and communicate our collective findings to a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Participate in ERM internal and external training opportunities to maintain and grow work-related skills and remain current on changes to regulatory requirements.
  • Build strong collaborative relationships with other ERM employees worldwide through our technical community and market-focused groups.
  • Actively embrace and support ERM’s leading health and safety training and workplace environment.
QUALIFICATIONS & DESIRABLE SKILLS
  • M.Sc in Toxicology, Biochemistry or other related technical field is preferred. A B.Sc will be considered if combined with substantial practical experience.
  • A minimum of 15 years of consulting experience in the design and delivery of human health risk assessments for environmental assessment projects. Regulatory and/or industry experience will be considered as well. The candidate must have demonstrated expertise with Health Canada technical approaches as well as provincial requirements for delivery of human health risk assessments. Experience in delivering human health risk assessment for contaminated sites projects is valued, but the emphasis is on environmental assessment experience.
  • Registration, or eligibility to apply to become a registered professional to be considered a Qualified Professional for oversight of and/or certifying regulatory deliverables.
  • Demonstrated ability for integrative approaches, particularly with respect to developing technical deliverables for environmental assessment and permit applications for mining projects as part of a larger team of professionals.
  • Experience with First Nations engagement efforts and regulatory review processes is desirable but not mandatory.
  • Excellent writing, communication, organization, and time management skills.

Note: If you are looking for new challenges with opportunities for career advancement, a desire to be part of a leading sustainability company, and working with some of the world’s largest mining, energy and natural resource development companies, this is your opportunity!
