Communications Specialist
Position: Permanent Full-time - 35 Hours Per Week - Monday to Friday - 12 months Position (1.0 FTE)
Salary range: $69,920 to $79,243
Start date: Immediately; Duration: Permanent
Reporting to: Manager of Communications and Community Relations
Member of the Communication Services Team responsible for planning and implementing district communications strategies, executing associated tactics, and utilizing technologically advanced platforms to build a positive reputation and relationships with internal and external communities reflecting BHNCDSB’s commitment to Human Rights, Equity and Well-Being.
Qualities / Skills / Specialized Knowledge
- High level of professionalism and the ability to handle confidential and sensitive matters.
- Knowledge of the education sector is considered an asset.
- Experience utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance output.
- Excellent skills using Microsoft Office Suite (emphasis on SharePoint), WordPress (or other CMS), Adobe Creative Suite, SMORE, CANVA for Education, Metricool (or other multi-publishing utilities).
- Excellent interpersonal skills with effective communication skills, both orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of industry best practices and emerging trends in social media, website, branding design and production.
- Ability to work both independently and part of a team.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make decisions.
Education / Experience And Qualifications
- Completion of diploma in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing or related education with equivalent experience will be considered.
- Minimum of 2-3 years of related experience in the field of Public Relations, Communications or similar role.
- Experience in communications, customer service and administrative coordination.
- Commitment and accountability to human rights, equity, reconciliation, anti-racism and anti-oppression using responsive strategic communications and community engagement approaches.
- Ability to write and edit communication content with accuracy and professionalism.
- Assist with distributing approved messages during emergencies as directed by senior staff.
- Management of digital platforms and social media channels for an established brand or organization with diverse and engaged audiences.
- Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent critical thinking skills and the ability to exercise good judgement when solving problems quickly and effectively.
- The successful applicant will be required to work after hours based on system needs.
- Ability to perform required physical tasks including lifting, carrying and moving objects. Applicants should be comfortable performing these tasks as a part of their daily responsibilities.
- Valid driver’s license and use of a personal vehicle required.
Key Job Requirements
Content Creation & Digital Engagement
- Collaborate on the creation of dynamic content that promotes the board’s strengths, programs, and student achievements across platforms.
- Support increased media coverage and brand visibility across platforms.
- Responsible for planning, developing, implementing, and maintaining internet and intranet content which includes – but is not limited to – graphic design, publishing, and content creation, ensuring compliance with AODA guidelines and communications best practices.
Strategic & Crisis Communications
- Support the District’s Strategic Plan with respect to strategic communications and marketing initiatives that are aligned with the board’s goals and community engagement priorities.
- Assist the Manager with crisis communication efforts, ensuring timely, accurate messaging and maintaining the board’sli>
- Regularly audit web pages and maintain an editorial calendar and workflow to ensure timely website content creation and updating of content, as required.
- Monitor all social media and communication channels including various district-level email accounts.
Writing and Editing
- Produce digital and print materials using superior research, writing, editing, and publishing skills. Examples include – but are not limited to – media releases; communications for internal and external audiences; training material; speeches; brochures; scripts; institutional advertisements; social media content; briefing notes; key messages; and other materials.
