Job description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority, (Island Health) patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Working within a collaborative, patient-centered, team environment, the Clinical Pharmacy Specialist functions as an expert practitioner, consultant, educator and researcher in a defined practice area. Provides consultation services to individuals and groups both within and outside the organization. Applies advanced clinical knowledge to assess, design, implement and evaluate medication use initiatives, research, training programs and the delivery of clinical pharmacy services.

QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Training And Experience

Licensed by the College of Pharmacists of British Columbia. An accredited post-baccalaureate PharmD from a Canadian University or an accredited Year Two Pharmacy Residency PLUS a minimum of two (2) years of clinical pharmacy practice experience including one year experience related to the defined practice area OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Demonstrated clinical knowledge and ability in the care of patients within area of specialty.
  • Ability to establish curricula and conduct performance evaluations for clinical rotations within assigned area.
  • Ability to retrieve and evaluate drug literature to support the development of clinical care pathways and medication use evaluations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with a variety of stakeholders
  • Ability to coach, mentor, teach, demonstrate techniques and facilitate learning within a multidisciplinary setting.
  • Ability to recognize and deal with emergent situations.
  • Ability to organize work, establish priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, staff, other health care providers and community agencies.

  • Ability to operate related equipment, including computerized systems.
