The Opportunity

CGMH is seeking interested nursing, respiratory therapy, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy students to join our Extern Program. This is an exciting opportunity for these students to work in a clinical environment where they can develop and consolidate competencies to prepare into a future registered role upon completion of their studies. Successful candidates will gain valuable patient care experience and build connections within an interprofessional environment in a hospital setting. The Clinical Extern may be considered for career opportunities upon graduation and licensure.

Qualifications
  • Must be enrolled in one of the following programs: Registered Nurse (RN) – enrolled in a program; Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) – enrolled in program; Respiratory Therapy – 2nd or 3rd year of a Diploma Program; Occupational Therapy – enrolled in a program; Physiotherapy – enrolled in a program
  • Current BLS certification required
  • Completion of any orientation and mandatory training during onboarding
  • Successful learning experiences in recent clinical placements
  • Must strive to continuously provide a safe and supportive environment for patients, staff, physicians, and volunteers
  • Must adhere to the duties of workers, as stipulated in the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Must have an ability to effectively communicate (written and verbal) in the English language in order to provide excellent communication with team members, patients and families. Ability to communicate in additional language(s) is considered an asset.
  • Must have basic computer skills
  • Must be dedicated to professional growth & development
  • Must be able to perform all bona fide and essential duties of the position, which may include physical demands such as moving/transferring patients, pushing, pulling, bending, etc.
  • Must have demonstrated excellent attendance/performance record
  • Excellent organization and prioritization skills
  • Ability to work independently and effectively communicate with other members of the health care team
Duties And Responsibilities

Practice under the direct or indirect supervision of an appropriate healthcare professional (e.g., RN, RPN, Respiratory Therapist)

  • Assist with activities of daily living to optimize patient independence and functioning. Activities may include:
    • Assistance with ADLs such as feeding, toileting, bathing, dressing
    • Mobility assistance (lifting, turning, positioning, transfer, ambulation)
    • Skin integrity measures
    • Answering call bells
    • Vital signs, height, weight measurement
    • Comfort measures and participation in comfort rounds
    • Contribution to care planning under nursing supervision
    • Companionship and social engagement
    • Reporting changes in patient status or safety concerns
    • Falls risk assessment, pain assessment, Braden Scale, CAM assessment
  • Participate in clinical rotations across specialty units
  • Adapt to rotating shifts covering days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays

Hours of Work: Hours will include days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. Please be reminded that as a Hospital, in order to provide the necessary patient care, our operations run 24/7. Therefore, depending on the program for which you are applying, it may be an expectation that you are available to work weekdays and weekends, as well as all shifts - days, evenings, and nights. Part-time staff regularly scheduled for up to 24 hours per week (48/pay).

Wage: $31.87 to $32.52 per hour
