The Planner 2 position focuses on applications in the City’s Town Centres and Downtown, involving high-density, mixed-use development, as well as master planning. Working with our applicants, their consultant teams, and other internal and external contributors, the Planner 2 will help implement the City’s recently approved Height Based Development Framework, a progressive approach to planning that prioritizes high-quality planning and design outcomes. In addition to the core responsibilities of advancing development applications, other responsibilities include providing early planning assessment and advice to potential applicants; applying City policy and legislation applicable to development applications; applying city planning expertise, and interpreting consultant studies as it relates to advancing development applications; reviewing and preparing complex current development proposals; preparing reports and bylaws; chairing meetings and attending Council and Committee meetings as required to present applications; organizing and attending other community and related meetings to provide advice, information, and to explain policies and procedures; working collaboratively with internal and external contacts and groups to lead development projects to completion; supporting the formulation, modification, and implementation of land use policy, practices, and regulations. Oversees and participates in the work of professional and/or technical staff engaged in major planning projects relating to land use, transportation, zoning, urban design or similar. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include Master's Degree in Planning or related discipline with considerable professional experience in urban or regional planning; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and objectives of urban and regional planning, as well as municipal land use policy and provincial land use regulation. Ability to express ideas effectively orally and in a written or graphic manner. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, professionals and the public, and to transmit clearly the principles and requirements of sound planning and development.
