Overview
Sperry Rail Service is a leading global provider of Rail Flaw Detection (RFD) services and technologies for railway networks worldwide. This is a heavy travel position; candidates must be willing and able to travel 3–4 months at a time throughout Canada.
Responsibilities
- Operate test vehicle/detector car on and off railroad tracks in all road conditions.
- Perform vehicle inspections and equipment setup.
- Record and interpret data on computer monitors.
- Service, maintain, and repair the vehicle and detector carriage under the vehicle, including crawling under the vehicle with limited clearance and working in awkward postures.
- Enter and exit the vehicle by stairs or ladders and conduct ground examinations of rails using hand test units.
Note: Personal protective equipment is required (safety glasses, safety steel-toed boots, hard hats, safety vests). Safety goggles and neoprene gloves may be required when handling vehicle fluids.
Requirements include annual training in Road Worker Safety.
Working Conditions and Safety
All work is field-based with potentially extreme weather conditions. Adhere to all company safety policies and report safety violations or faulty conditions to the supervisor.
Essential Functions
- Operate detector car, assist crew with measurements and recordings, and place/use test equipment on the rail line. Load materials as needed and manage entry/exit to the vehicle.
- Identify car and track conditions, test data, and equipment function.
- Communicate clearly with pilot and crew members and through radio/intercom; respond to alarms and safety rules as required.
- Inspect and maintain vehicle motor, body, carriage, generator, and perform cleaning and routine vehicle maintenance, including under-vehicle work.
Physical Demands by Area
- Lower Extremity— Maintain awkward postures under the vehicle; various crawling and leg movements.
- Locomotion— Walk on uneven surfaces, climb steps, and ascend/descend vehicle stairs (up to ~300 steps per day).
- Upper Extremity— Use hand tools, reach gauges, and operate equipment with full range of motion.
- Back/Neck Postures— Bending, twisting, and neck movements within full range.
- Sitting/Standing— Prolonged sitting during operation and alternating standing tasks.
- Special Senses— Visual and auditory vigilance to observe signals, read data, and respond to alarms.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
- Valid Class 3 or higher CDL with air brake endorsement
- Excellent verbal and written communication
- Ability to perform basic mechanical tasks (e.g., changing a tire, replacing a battery)
- Lift up to 85 lbs; occasionally assist with objects over 100 lbs
- Ability to squat, kneel, and crawl for extended periods
- Ability to crawl under an 18-inch clearance
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of commercial driving experience
- High School Diploma or GED
- Bilingual in English/French
