Overview

The Quinte West Public Library inspires learning, literacy, creativity and connection. We are a two branch system, with locations in Trenton and Frankford, striving tirelessly to offer our community the best possible library experience. Successful candidates will demonstrate skills in library programming, technology assistance, and excellent customer service throughout the hiring process.

Purpose and Scope

The Shelving Assistant plays an important role in maintaining a well-organized, accessible and orderly collection of library material in many formats. As an essential part of a customer driven team, this position will be well-informed and passionate about the programs, events and services offered by the library.

Responsibilities
  • Reshelve library materials.
  • Maintain materials in the library collections in a neat and orderly fashion.
  • Assist in other support tasks as assigned.
  • Perform alphanumeric sorting and filling tasks.
  • Arrange returned material on book trucks.
  • Assist in housekeeping duties such as dusting, shelf reading, and straightening shelves.
  • Refer patrons to appropriate staff.
  • Assist with opening and closing procedures such as informing the public that the library is about to close, checking that the public have left the library, cleaning off tables, tidying library in particular the children’s play areas.
  • Anticipate and adapt to change with a sense of optimism and opportunity.
  • Provide assistance to all library users in a manner that is warm, welcoming and respectful.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding library user information.
  • Demonstrate loyalty and commitment to the organization.
  • Comply with the Employee Code of Conduct.
  • Ensure adherence to the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Library policies.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications
  • Enrolled in or completion of High School or the equivalent.
  • Good communication skills and the ability and enthusiasm to promote the collections and services of the library are essential.
  • Flexibility, a positive attitude, the ability to adapt to an evolving workplace and a commitment to excellent customer service are essential.
  • The position has no supervisory responsibility.
Decision Making
  • This position has no responsibility related to decision making affecting the organization.
Work Experience
  • Less than 6 months.
  • Work in an office like environment on a regular basis.
  • Evening and weekend shifts.
