Job Description

Working with the Town of Newmarket’s Recreation and Culture Team means the opportunity to make a difference and connect with your community! Working in Recreation means the start of something special, gaining valuable work experience and learning new skills. We are looking for dedicated individuals who enjoy working with others with a passion to deliver high quality programs, events and services. One thing is for certain, you will love the experience and our participants will too!

The Successful Candidate Will
  • Oversee and support staff and Inclusion volunteers through ongoing coaching, formal performance evaluations, and staff discipline, as needed.
  • Plan and coordinate camp programs through the preparation of Camp Binders and forms, delivering camp equipment on-site as needed, updating staff manuals and resources, and providing behaviour management strategies.
  • Visit camp sites daily to ensure camps are following all Town policies, procedures and bylaws, as well as provide suggestions to improve the quality of our camp services.
  • Plans and facilitates staff trainings and meetings in collaboration with the Recreation Programmer and Camp Coordinator team, with a focus on 1:1 staff and leading inclusion workshops.
  • Meet with all caregivers of campers requesting 1:1 support, and ensuring All About Me Packages are filled out to ensure our staff are well-informed.
  • Creates inclusion aids such as fidget kids, visual schedules, etc. based on information provided by caregivers during intake meetings.
  • Completes inventory checks, orders camp supplies to support quality camp programming, and tracks purchases to ensure purchases fall within budget allocations.
  • Collaborates with outside user groups to ensure all parties are on the same page in delivering safe and quality programming. User groups may include Aquatics, Facilities, Customer Service, Subsidy, Special Guests, Bus Company, Vendor Camps, etc.
  • Respond to inquiries, resolve escalated concerns, emergency situations, and assist with registrations via phone, email, and in-person, for campers requiring 1:1 support.

Job Requirements
  • Post-secondary education in a related discipline (such as Recreation and Leisure, etc) combined with progressive experience in inclusive recreation programming and/or related equivalent experience.
  • Experience in a supervisory role in related field.
  • Extensive experience working with children, youth and/or adults in recreational delivery settings including persons with special needs, and implementing behaviour management strategies.
  • Excellent leadership, organizational, public relations and time management skills.
  • Class “G” Driver’s Licence in good standing and a reliable vehicle for corporate business.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, collaborate with co-workers and deal courteously and effectively with staff, participants, parents/guardians and the general public.
  • Strong working knowledge of computers in Microsoft (Word, Excel, Outlook); Xplor experience is an asset.
  • Current Standard First Aid & CPR-C certification required.
  • Current High Five (Principles of Healthy Child Development) certification required.
  • Behaviour Management Systems, Safe Management or Crisis Prevention and Intervention certification required
  • Lifesaving Society’s Safeguard certification required.
  • Due to the nature of the contacts of this position a Police Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the Town (Those 18 Years & Older) or the completion of Declaration of Minors – Working with Vulnerable Individuals Self Declaration Form (Those 17 Years and Younger) is required.

Certifications are not required at time of application but must be obtained prior to job commencement. The Town of Newmarket may offer opportunities for certification.
