About This Career Opportunity

Black & McDonald is currently seeking a Building Operator to join our Vancouver team! If you are a hands-on, customer service-oriented, and technically-inclined professional searching for the opportunity to build a solid foundation for your career, this position is for you.

Reporting to the Facilities Management & Operations (FMO) Supervisor, the Building Operator for the Single Room Occupancy (SRO) Sites in the Downtown Eastside (DTES) Vancouver area is responsible for maintaining safe conditions inside and outside of the facilities, performing minor plumbing and electrical repairs, as well as using computerized building management systems. They will conduct mechanical inspection and maintenance of equipment using FMO strategies to ensure continuing operation. The Building Operator uses experience and technical skills with preventive maintenance and system operations to meet the service requirements required by contract obligations. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • In conjunction with the Supervisor or Project Manager and the team, plan and execute responsive and planned maintenance in accordance with the computerized maintenance management system
  • Establish methods to meet work schedules and co-ordinate work activities with other subcontractors
  • Perform basic inspections on various building systems (i.e. emergency generator, fire alarms, security access and CCTV systems)
  • Respond to the Housing Managers' requests and work with the Black & McDonald Call Center, reporting back with response and rectification times
  • Perform light duties such as cleaning, painting, HVAC, Plumbing, and other Mechanical duties, supervising sub-contractor technicians, mechanics, etc.
  • Build and maintain customer and supplier/vendor relationships
  • Assist in developing and implementing quality control programs
  • Assist in purchase of building materials
  • Review work/contracts/Work In Progress for areas of risk and correct deficiencies
  • Abide by all Corporate Health & Safety regulations and policies

Education Requirements
  • Power Engineering Certification is an asset but not required
Work Experience Requirements
  • 1-3 years’ experience as a Building Operator/Handyman or similar role
  • 1-3 years’ experience working within commercial buildings/facilities or in construction would be considered an asset
Skills, Abilities, and Other Requirements
  • Must be comfortable working within the Downtown Eastside environment
  • Understanding of basic computer skills and working knowledge of Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Knowledge in building automation, mechanical, electrical, and fire life systems is an asset
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills required
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instruction
  • Must be a team player, work well with others
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor at all times with customers and employees
  • Must be available for occasional Emergency after hours duties as part of a rotation
  • Must be able to walk between various sites within the DTES as required

Expected compensation for this role is a starting pay range between $27-$33/hour dependent on skills and experience.
