Summary

Bonjour Café is the first café founded and run by people with intellectual disabilities in London, Ontario.

Description

Established in August 2017, the Bonjour Café was the first café founded and run by people with intellectual disabilities in London, Ontario. From August 2017–March 2020, the Bonjour Cafe opened its doors on Thursdays from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm at the L’Arche London Gathering Place in Lambeth. It provided an opportunity for training and social connection. After a 4‑year hiatus due to the Covid‑19 pandemic, the Bonjour Café will re‑open its doors on Thursday, August 22nd, 2024. From September 2024–June 2025, L’Arche London will run four 10‑week sessions of a Hospitality Training Program. This vocational program will give participants an opportunity to learn the skills to work in the hospitality industry. Each session will welcome 4 participants, who will spend one morning/week in class, one afternoon/week in the kitchen (cooking and baking), and one day/week interning in the Bonjour Café or other Café locations.

Bonjour Café and Hospitality Training Program Volunteers will:

  • Work under the direction of the Culinary Leader.
Volunteer Hours (Sessions)
  • Wednesdays from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm (working with Core Members to cook and bake for the Bonjour Cafe)
  • Wednesdays from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm (supporting Core Members in the classroom)
  • Wednesdays from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm (working with Core Members to cook and bake for the Bonjour Cafe)
  • Thursdays from 8:00 am – 2:00 pm (supporting the Core Members to welcome and serve customers, plate food, clean the kitchen)
Responsibilities
  • Ensuring safety for all in the kitchen
  • Assisting/supporting Core Members to perform kitchen tasks
  • Preparing and displaying food
  • Making coffee, tea, hot chocolate
  • Assembling serving ware
  • Setting up and clearing display case and coffee table, tables and chairs
  • Welcoming and serving guests
  • Washing dishes
  • Custodial duties: emptying garbage, sweeping kitchen floor, cleaning washrooms at the end of the day
  • Working with the Bonjour Café team to support each other in completing all tasks necessary before leaving for the day
  • Providing extra support to Hospitality Training Program participants while workshop leaders teach the classes
  • Other relevant duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Hard‑working, personable, flexible and able to work cooperatively with fellow Team Members.
  • Consistent commitment for 10 months.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of the Identity and Mission of L’Arche is an asset.
  • Must “be with” rather than “do for” the Core Members.
  • Food Handler Training Certificate is an asset.
  • Experience (formal or informal) with teaching is an asset (especially with neurodiverse learners).
  • Experience (formal or informal) with cooking/baking is an asset.
Requirements
  • Willing to undergo a background or police records check.
  • When: ASAP.
  • Minimum Age Requirement: Adult (Age 18‑54).
