Job description

ELK LAKE VETERINARY HOSPITAL | Care. Compassion. Continuity.

Associate Veterinarian

Here, we value your voice, respect your knowledge, and will support you as you continue to build your expertise in the areas of veterinary medicine that light you up. We have an amazing team because we seek out and nurture awesome humans - the only thing we love more than great ideas to improve our patient care is working together to put those ideas into action. Come join us!

About Us

We know it takes a full team to make the veterinary magic happen. Our hospital operates with a high support staff ratio - veterinarians have a dedicated assistant on consult days, while on surgery days they have a team of RVTs and TAs trained in surgical support. Client care is kept well in hand with several Reception staff scheduled each day to field questions, book appointments, and take care of finances. We don’t compromise on our support roles - you will have the help you need, so you can spend your time delivering excellent veterinary medicine.

We strive to consciously ‘walk the walk’ of creating a thriving team culture. Our daily rounds, weekly updates and monthly staff meetings keep our communication lines clear and take care of the function, while regular better-than-work events like lake days or whale watching make sure we also bring the fun! Word has gotten around about our positive workplace vibe - we are one of the first hospitals to be CLEAR Blue certified through Not One More Vet, signaling our commitment to prioritizing mental wellbeing in the workplace.

With our unrelenting focus on providing top-notch patient care, we are working toward Fear Free certification and have an RVT who specializes in supporting anxious, nervous, or aggressive patients. There isn’t time in every consult to help mitigate these issues, so here patients and their people can be offered follow-up tech appointments that focus specifically on reducing fear and stress. We offer unparalleled access to specialist support, including a boarded orthopedic surgeon onsite weekly, as well as in-house rehabilitation therapy, chiropractic, and ultrasonography.

About Your Role

We respect your professional expertise, and give you the tools, support, and independence to manage your time and cases as you prefer. At the same time, your veterinary colleagues are always available to lend an extra set of eyes, ears, or hands when you need them; if you need a sounding board to talk through a challenging case, you’ll have no trouble finding a willing collaborator here.

At ELVH, your consult days are judiciously scheduled with a combination of pre-booked and same-day appointments, with catch-up blocks included throughout the day so that when your consults are finished, your day is also complete. Vancouver Island is truly paradise, and we want to make sure you have time to enjoy it!

You are no doubt aware of the daily expectations for the role of an Associate Veterinarian in a general practice hospital. In addition, the requirements and opportunities for this role include:

  • Strong preference for Saturday shift availability, either on a regular or rotating basis
  • Opportunity to perform surgical procedures, including dentals, if this is of interest to you
  • No on-call or after-hours shift requirements

Our Offer

What we offer to exceptional veterinary professionals like you will typically include:

  • Compensation depending on your experience and future potential
  • Signing bonus/retention bonus, and the option for relocation assistance
  • Industry-leading dental and extended health benefits
  • Employee Assistance Program covering legal, financial, and counseling support
  • Paid vacation and holidays
  • Generous Continuing Education allowance
  • License fees and dues coverage, including VIN and VetGirl memberships
  • Discounted care and supplies for your companion animals
  • Flexibility to grow our practice along your lines of interest/experience
