Job summary

A community service organization in Edmonton is seeking a Recreation Therapist to support residents through recreation therapy programs. Job Description

Accountabilities

Resident Care

  • Support the Recreation Therapy Manager in planning, implementation, and evaluation of the Recreation Therapy Program to meet the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of residents.
  • Provide direct recreation therapy services, including resident assessments, care planning, and one-on-one programming for residents at Grace Manor.
  • Demonstrate a trauma-informed care focus with an understanding of harm reduction.
  • Assist in conducting recreation therapy assessments using a therapeutic recreation model and tools grounded in best practice.
  • Organize, direct, and evaluate ongoing opportunities for residents to engage in community outings.
  • Provide therapeutic recreation services in functional intervention, leisure education and recreation participation.
  • Collaborate with residents to develop goal-directed plans of care for recreation, leisure, and social engagement.
  • Empower residents to be independent, learn and practice new skills, and make choices for themselves.
  • Operate within the scope of practice of a Recreation Therapist to deliver safe, efficient and effective recreation services.
  • Liaise with Alberta Health Services regarding residents sponsored by AHS, including assessment of leisure, social and recreation needs and recommendations to the appropriate team member.
  • Assess resident responses to interventions and report significant changes to the Recreation Therapy Manager and appropriate team members.
  • Ensure a high standard of evidence-based, resident-centered programming.
  • Foster relationships with community and recreational groups to enhance resident programming.

Program Coordination and Administration

  • Provide administrative support to the Recreation Therapy Manager, including scheduling, documentation, reporting, and other operational tasks.
  • Maintain accurate documentation according to professional standards for risk management, quality improvement, and funding requirements.
  • Maintain a pool of resources with other community services for resident access.
  • Ensure adequate recreation supplies and equipment are maintained.
  • Assist other departments with daily routines to enhance quality of life and ensure health and safety of residents (e.g., clean up spills, assist with personal hygiene).
  • Evaluate client progress and document findings.
  • Occasionally drive residents to out-of-site recreational activities using company vehicles.

Other

  • Communicate in a sensitive and compassionate manner with residents and families, promoting dignity and respect.
  • Represent the Recreation Therapy Team at internal and external meetings as assigned.
  • Participate in the Occupational Health and Safety Program as required.
  • Represent The Salvation Army in a professional manner and uphold its Mission.
  • Work as part of the Case Management Team to ensure efficient, safe, resident-oriented care, including participating in case conferences.
  • All other work-related duties as assigned.

Critical Relationship Management

  • Councils and Boards: None
  • Internal: Various ad hoc committees, staff member, department managers on recreation activities for residents.
  • External: Community groups, Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association, and other external recreation groups.

Managerial Responsibility

  • This position reports directly to the Recreation Therapy Manager.
  • Acts as a Team Lead and may supervise Recreation Assistants in the absence of the Recreation Therapy Manager.

Financial and Materials Management

  • Minor material responsibility: maintain confidential files and resident reports.
  • May be allowed to handle a credit card with a $3,000 limit.
  • No budgetary responsibilities.

Working Conditions

  • Work is conducted in residential common areas, community recreation facilities, outdoor spaces, and office or residential rooms; travel between Edmonton sites and surrounding areas may be required, including some non-local travel.
  • Potential exposure to aggressive or violent individuals, hazardous substances, and other risky conditions.
  • Working conditions may involve dealing with angry or abusive people, exposure to bodily fluids, waste, infectious diseases, drugs, alcohol and solvents, physical attacks, and toxic chemicals.
  • Immunization for Hepatitis B and vaccination against Tuberculosis may be required.

Education and Experience Qualifications

Education, Qualifications and Certifications

  • Completion of a formal post-secondary/college program of two academic years in Recreation Therapy, Leisure Studies, or Recreation Administration is required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation Therapy, Leisure Studies, Recreation Administration, or related field is an asset.
  • National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Certification is an asset.
  • Current license with the Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association.

Experience and Skills

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in recreation programming.
  • Minimum of 1 year supervisory experience in recreation.
  • Experience in the social services sector with persons with mental illness and/or addiction is preferred.
  • Current certifications: Standard First Aid, CPR & BLS, Safe Check Food Safe.
  • Understanding of Trauma-Informed Care practices.
  • Valid Driver’s License and clean Driver’s Abstract; Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Proficiency with email and Microsoft Office preferred.

This is a Full-time position.

Weekly scheduled hours: 40 hours

Compensation: Target hiring range is $49,912.66 to $74,869.00 per annum. Placement within the salary range is based on market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills and qualifications relevant to the role.
