The Department for the Study of Religion and the Department of East Asian Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Religions of Transnational East Asia. This will be a joint appointment between the Department for the Study of Religion (60%) and the Department of East Asian Studies (40%). The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026.
Engage in innovative and independent research and establish an outstanding, competitive, externally funded program. Teach courses in both the Department for the Study of Religion and the Department of East Asian Studies. Contribute to interdisciplinary and multi-methodological research and teaching, focusing on the historical and/or contemporary processes of the making and unmaking of religion in transnational East Asia.
Candidates must have earned a Ph.D. in the Study of Religion, East Asian Studies, or a related discipline by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. Evidence of research excellence includes publications in top-ranked journals or forthcoming works meeting high international standards, a strong research statement, conference presentations, awards, and strong referee letters. Language proficiency is expected in the candidate’s area of research. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided via a teaching dossier and strong letters of reference.
