About The Division

The Community Development Division is focused on building sustainable, climate-resilient communities. We deliver essential services and infrastructure, support local governance, and promote active living. Through the Community Affairs, Community Operations, Infrastructure Development, Land Development, and Sport & Recreation branches, the division provides municipal-type services in unincorporated areas, develops land in Whitehorse and rural communities, and manages infrastructure projects that provide local services. We work with partners in municipalities, First Nation governments and organizations like the Association of Yukon Communities to ensure sustainable service delivery.

  • Assistant Deputy Minister – Community Development

The Assistant Deputy Minister – Community Development has a critical role in advancing the departments vision of vibrant, healthy and sustainable Yukon communities. This role is responsible for providing senior leadership to programs, functions and services that empower local governments and building collaborative relationships. They provide strategic direction and support the development of an integrated, effective and responsive division, and play a key role in the department’s Senior Management Team.

As an ideal candidate, you will have a proven record of success as a strategic, influential and service-oriented leader who has effectively committed and applied resources to achieve positive and meaningful results at an organizational and community level. You are able to balance multiple priorities in a complex, multi-disciplinary and often high-profile work environment, and cultivating effective working relationships within the department, across Yukon government, and with First Nations, provincial/territorial, federal, and municipal governments in the pursuit of shared objectives that advance the vision, mission and mandate of department and the Government of Yukon.

This competition will establish an eligibility list that may be used to fill similar positions in the department.

Essential Qualifications
  • Strong executive-level experience in the public sector; combined with a theoretical base in leadership, community development, or public sector administration, including strategic planning, human resources, and financial management.
  • Experience providing strategic leadership in the management of diverse and complex program areas, leading teams and working collaboratively across government and externally.
  • Post secondary education with a focus in community development, infrastructure planning, political science, public administration, business or related field.
  • Experience with or working knowledge of Yukon First Nations Final and Self-Government Agreements.
  • Extensive experience in intergovernmental relations, policy and/or communications in a senior level or leadership role.
  • Extensive experience in collaborative problem solving, facilitation and conflict resolution.

Candidates who have education, training, and experience equivalent to the essential qualifications listed above may be equally considered.

Conditions of Employment: Ability to travel internationally across borders, valid passport, class 5 driver’s licence
