Job description
About the position

Employer: Toews Environmental Consulting & Aquatic Sciences

Toews Environmental Consulting & Aquatic Sciences is a Winnipeg-based consultancy drawing on multidisciplinary experience to provide expertise in aquatic ecology, nutrient and algae dynamics, contaminants assessment, ecotoxicology, fish and fish habitat biology, and lake management projects across Canada. Led by Jay Toews P.Biol., R.P.Bio., C.Chem., P.Chem., TECAS is a place to feed interest and passion by learning, doing excellent work, developing expertise while collaborating with other professionals, and truly participating in ownership and growth in a workplace that advances science while putting people first.

TECAS has immediate openings for seasonal Aquatic Science Technicians to participate in projects that include:

  • Water, sediment and fish sampling as part of a watershed-scale investigation of ongoing effects of historical mercury contamination.
  • Development of water quality improvement and management plans for waterbodies experiencing eutrophication-related impacts including harmful algae blooms.
  • Environmental Assessment and Permitting support to a variety of instream construction and water diversion projects.
  • Environmental field support to instream construction projects, including mussel and fish relocations and design and implementation of Monitoring and Response Plans.

Successful applicants will have excellent field skills and aptitudes that include physical strength and mindfulness to care for valuable electronic instruments while operating equipment such as boats, motors and trailers (even in inclement weather, if necessary). They will have strong organizational skills as well as comfort and proficiency working in diverse teams and settings including First Nations communities in semi-remote areas. Data analysis and writing skills are highly valued, as all team members will lead or contribute to report writing in the projects they’re involved in.

Whereas the current seasonal positions focus on water and biological sampling in the field, a focus of sustainable growth and leadership development within TECAS means that all types of experience and expertise are valuable and valued. Candidates will have opportunity to transition to permanent employment and are encouraged to highlight their skills, interests and vision for their careers, profession and the workplace.

The successful candidates will work primarily from home and in field settings with flexible hours but will have access to home-based office and laboratory space in central Winnipeg. Field work will comprise shorter, more focused studies with more variety than much of the consulting industry offers.

A valid driver’s licence and Pleasure Craft Operator’s Card are requirements of this year’s positions. Certification in electrofishing would be an asset.

TECAS is a place of continual learning and professional development where committed employees have true increasing opportunity for company ownership. We uphold tenets of integrity of character and care for people as people. We believe in advancing science and promoting its practical application across the geographical and regulatory landscapes. Whatever skills and interests you might have, we can probably use and develop them!
