Job description
Apprentice Regional Heavy Equipment Mechanic

The Department of Infrastructure (INF) provides high quality services to the public and Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) departments, boards and agencies including the planning, design, construction, acquisition, operation and maintenance of public transportation infrastructure and the buildings, works and equipment required for the GNWT to deliver its programs and services. INF makes essential petroleum products available for sale to the public where these products are not provided by the private sector, and promotes the development and increased use of energy efficient technologies. INF also regulates electrical and mechanical safety services and licenses individuals and vehicles operating in the territory.

The position is located in Yellowknife at the Combined Services Building, but also works regularly out of the Edzo Highway's maintenance camp. This position reports to the Regional Manager Highway Operations. The apprentice Heavy Equipment Mechanic assists in implementing a planned service, maintenance and repair program for all heavy and light equipment utilized in the North Slave Region to provide maximum equipment availability, operating at their optimum capacity. The Apprentice Regional HEM implements a planned service, maintenance and repair program for all heavy and light equipment utilized at Yellowknife and Edzo Highway maintenance camps and the Yellowknife Airport in order to provide maximum equipment availability, operating at their optimum capability: (Approximately 120 units.)

The Apprentice HEM reconditions, rebuilds and repairs equipment with a dollar value of $100 to $40,000 in parts and materials per unit. The HEM controls the extent and nature of repairs within the original estimates and brings any increases to cost estimates to the attention of the Regional Manager, Highway Operations.

This position is responsible for preventative maintenance (PM) checks: A, B and C with a dollar value of $100 to $2000 depending on level of PM and type of equipment. The HEM determines the timing and requirement for level of PM for the particular unit and proceeds at own discretion.

The Apprentice HEM is responsible for Condition Reports, where inspections of a particular unit can lead to repair in the amounts shown above or recommendation for surplus and replacement of the unit. Replacements costs of mobile equipment can range from $1000 to $300,000. The Regional HEM completes condition reports based on experience and knowledge and makes recommendations for repair or replacement to the Regional Manager, Highway Operations.

Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:

  • Completion of a high school diploma and six (6) months relevant experience.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Successful completion of the Apprentice Entrance Exam
  • Incumbent (s) must possess a medical clearance to confirm fitness to perform physical requirements of position.
  • Class 3 Drivers License with air to operate equipment for testing purposes or must be able to obtain this within 18 months of hire.
