Job summary

A research institute in Montreal is seeking an Animal Care Technician to perform various animal care duties and technical procedures. The role requires excellent organizational skills, ability to work well in diverse environments, and proficiency in both French and English. Prior experience with animals is preferred. This is a part-time, temporary position with a pay scale of $22.83 to $34.26 per hour.

Overview

Join the Research Institute of the MUHC in Montreal, a world-renowned biomedical and hospital research centre. The RI-MUHC is the research arm of the MUHC affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University and is supported in part by FRQS.

Position summary

Under the general supervision of the Animal Resources Division Manager, the candidate performs animal care-related duties, technical procedures and administrative duties related to the care and use of laboratory animals on various RI-MUHC sites.

Responsibilities
  • Performs husbandry duties related to the care and maintenance of animals
  • Records and reports data related to animal care or animal use
  • Cleans, washes and disinfects cages
  • Receives, stores and delivers food and accessories required for the keeping and maintenance of the animals
  • Helps maintain inventory of materials and equipment
  • Distributes clean linen and uniforms
  • Operates and monitors equipment, tools, materials and instruments
  • Interacts with researchers
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to prioritize work
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to adapt and perform effectively in different work environments
  • Excellent organizational skills in managing multiple priorities, multi-tasking and time-sensitive issues with minimal supervision
  • Proficient in French and English (spoken and written)
  • Previous experience working with animals is an asset
Employment details
  • Status: Temporary Occasional Part-time (on call); hours per week vary by division needs
  • Training offered at start of employment, requiring a minimum of 2 consecutive weeks of in-week (Mon-Fri, 35 hours / week) availability
  • Pay Scale: $22.83 to $34.26 per hour; commensurate with qualifications and experience
  • Work Shift: starts at 7 a.m. (Saturday and / or Sunday, holidays, and vacation replacements)
  • Work Site: RI-MUHC – site Glen and site HGM
