Job description
Overview

The Cardiac Anesthesia Division is actively recruiting a locum to support a growing program. The division consists of 8 members. The members provide seamless coverage with pre-operative consultation, anesthesia for cardiac surgery and postoperative care in the Cardiac Surgery ICU. The Cardiac Surgery ICU is a 6-bed unit with capacity to expand to 8 beds. Our cardiac surgery volume is 600 cases per year with plans to increase significantly due to rapidly growing patient demand. The scope covers the entire spectrum of cardiac surgery, excluding minimally invasive procedures and transplant. We also provide short-term mechanical support (V-A ECMO, V-V ECMO, VAD). Additionally, the division supports the TAVI program with an annual volume of 150 cases. We also provide consultation and TEE support to our general anesthesia colleagues for patients having complex non-cardiac surgery. When fully staffed, we aim for a 50/50 split between cardiac anesthesia and the general anesthesia. In addition to appointment to the Dept. of Anesthesia, members of the Cardiac Anesthesia Division receive an adjunct appointment to the Dept. of Cardiac Sciences. We are a group of 44 anesthesiologists providing a full-service tertiary referral service to patients located in a geographical area larger than France. We pride ourselves on being a supportive group who provide the highest quality of care in a complex high acuity environment. All department members must be fellows of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada in Anesthesiology, meet the requirements for privileging with our hospital and be able to fulfill call requirements including acute pain services management, out of OR sedation, obstetrics/gynaecology, paediatrics, trauma, urology, orthopaedic, thoracic, vascular, plastic, ENT and general surgery. The successful cardiac anesthesia candidate must have a formal (12-month) fellowship and have achieved TEE certification from the National Board of Echocardiography. KGH is also a teaching hospital academically affiliated with the University of British Columbia’s Southern Medical Program. As part of your new role you will have the opportunity to teach medical students and residents and make an impact in education and research in the community.
