Job description
Account Manager

Composite Power Group has operated as an electrical utility sales representative for over 45 years. Our sales team takes the initiative to connect the suppliers in our portfolio with companies building the grid. We focus on the sale of equipment for high‑voltage distribution lines, transmission lines, and substations, and we work with industry‑leading suppliers that are committed to innovation and to doing business in Canada.

We are a growing company with a national presence and manage a large sales portfolio. We offer our team independence and autonomy in decision‑making to develop long‑term, trust‑based partnerships with our customers and suppliers.

About the role

We are looking for a highly motivated Account Manager to join our team in Alberta, with a preference for the Greater Calgary Area. The role is ideal for individuals who can blend sales and business development skills with knowledge of power systems. Top performers in our business build and grow strong customer relationships by facilitating and consulting with customers on the specification and sale of high‑voltage electrical equipment. Top performers can also execute long‑cycle sales plans that require connecting with and influencing key decision‑makers across our customers’ organizations, including senior managers, procurement teams, engineers, and field operations staff.

Details of the position

Type: Permanent, Full Time

Compensation range: 95,000 CAD – 160,000+ CAD

Compensation comprises a base salary, vehicle benefits, and a sales incentive that increases with sales results. The base salary will be determined by the candidate’s education, experience, and relationships.

Location: Calgary (Preferred). Candidates located in Edmonton will also be considered.

The successful candidate will operate from a home office, so having one or the ability to create one is a must for the position. This is not considered a fully remote position.

Travel: Must be willing to travel throughout Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia, and occasionally into other parts of Canada and the US.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain strong, trusting, and loyal working relationships with customers, suppliers, and team members.
  • Consult with customers on capital spending plans and procurement plans to help focus business development and sales activities.
  • Be comfortable interacting effectively with clients of all levels and backgrounds, from executives to front‑line construction workers. The ability to connect and communicate with engineers and project managers is critical to this role.
  • Be self‑motivated and autonomous, able to plan and organize sales calls and own schedule to make efficient use of resources.
  • Have the ability to create and deliver high‑calibre technical and commercial presentations.
  • Understand market pricing, competition, and the competitive environment. Strive to sell on value vs. price.
  • Develop, present, and effectively close proposals and RFQs ranging from large projects and multi‑year contracts to quotes for parts and components.
  • Resolve technical and commercial issues with support from vendors and other team members.
  • Track and manage sales activity in a CRM environment (Salesforce.com).
Qualifications
  • A university degree or a college diploma in Electrical Engineering is preferred. Education can take many forms – we are open to speaking with candidates who believe they have the skills and capabilities for this position through equivalent industry experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience working in the Alberta Utility industry or other relevant industry experience that provides insight and understanding of our customer base.
  • Knowledge of power distribution, transmission, and substation construction is considered an asset.
  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings, bills of materials, specifications, and industry standards.
  • Existing customer or client relationships in the electric utilities, engineering firms, and/or contractors in Alberta are considered assets.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft 365.
  • Excellent communication skills in English.

Note: This list is not exhaustive; additional responsibilities may be added based on the company’s specific needs.
