THE OFFICE OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES

The Office of Undergraduate Studies (OUS), an established unit within the Office of the Provost, operates with goals to meet and exceed retention, persistence, graduation, and career outcomes noted in the strategic plan. OUS comprises three major units: The Academic Center for Excellence, Center for Career & Professional Success, and the Office of General Education. Collectively, OUS units provide transformative offerings through three major functions: academic excellence support, academic and career exploration, and career development.

BASIC FUNCTION

The Academic and Career Advisor delivers integrated academic and career advising to an assigned caseload of undergraduate students. The advisor supports student persistence, timely progression, graduation, and post-graduate outcomes through proactive advising, data-informed outreach, and high-impact student success practices.

ADVISING SCOPE AND CASELOAD
  • Manages a defined caseload aligned to an advising cluster (for example FTIC, undecided, pre-professional, or major-based cohorts).
  • Provides holistic advising that integrates academic planning, major exploration, career readiness, and institutional navigation.
  • Serves as a consistent point of contact for students from entry through graduation or transition to faculty advising.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
Student Advising and Support
  • Deliver proactive, student-centered academic and career advising using scheduled appointments, targeted outreach, and early-alert interventions.
  • Guide students in understanding degree requirements, academic policies, registration processes, and academic standing expectations.
  • Support students in major exploration, decision-making, and alignment of academic choices with career interests and goals.
  • Refer students to appropriate campus resources and track follow-through.
  • Document advising interactions accurately and consistently in the student information system.
Retention, Progression, and Graduation
  • Monitor academic progress and intervene when students show risk indicators.
  • Support milestone completion such as major declaration, credit progression, experiential learning engagement, and graduation clearance.
  • Contribute directly to unit goals related to retention, persistence, and completion.
Career Integration
  • Integrate career readiness conversations into advising interactions, including skills articulation, experiential learning, and post-graduate planning.
  • Collaborate with career services partners to support internships, fellowships, graduate school preparation, and workforce outcomes.
Collaboration and Communication
  • Collaborate with faculty, enrollment management, student success units, and advising colleagues to support consistent student success practices.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with students, families, faculty, and staff.
  • Participate in advising meetings, trainings, and unit initiatives.
Data, Compliance, and Continuous Improvement
  • Use student data and advising metrics to inform outreach and advising strategies.
  • Maintain compliance with institutional policies, FERPA, and advising protocols.
  • Participate in professional development and continuous improvement activities.
Other Duties
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of advising operations and student success initiatives.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • A bachelor’s degree is required.
  • One to three years of experience in academic advising, student success, higher education, or a related field.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
  • Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, student affairs, or related fields.
  • Experience with integrated academic and career advising models.
  • Demonstrated use of data to drive student outreach and outcomes.
