Job summary

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geography, History, Global Politics, or Humanities is required.
  • Recognised teaching qualification such as PGCE, B.Ed or equivalent is essential.
  • Experience in teaching IB and IGCSE curriculum is desirable.

We are recruiting for an outstanding Individuals and Societies Teacher to join the GEMS World Academy in Abu Dhabi from August 2026.

Job Purpose

The Teacher of Individuals and Societies is responsible for delivering high‑quality teaching and learning within the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), IGCSE, Careers related Program and/or Diploma Programme (DP). The role aims to inspire students to become internationally minded, critical thinkers who understand societies, cultures, and global systems, in line with the IB Learner Profile and the school’s vision.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver engaging, inquiry‑based lessons aligned with the IB MYP, IGCSE, CP and DP Individuals and Societies / Humanities curriculum.
  • Develop students’ critical thinking, research, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Use a range of teaching strategies to meet the needs of diverse learners, including EAL and SEND students.
  • Embed ATL (Approaches to Learning) skills and international‑mindedness into lessons.
  • Design and administer formative and summative assessments in line with IB and Pearson IGCSE assessment criteria.
  • Provide timely, constructive feedback to students to support progress.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attainment and progress.
  • Contribute to student reports, parent‑teacher conferences, and academic review meetings.
  • Contribute to the development, review, and evaluation of the Individuals and Societies curriculum across IB MYP, IGCSE, CP and DP.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure vertical and horizontal alignment across the programme.
  • Integrate interdisciplinary learning where appropriate.
Student Wellbeing and Pastoral Care
  • Act as a form tutor, supporting students’ academic and personal development.
  • Promote positive behaviour, student wellbeing, and safeguarding in line with school policies.
  • Build positive relationships with students based on mutual respect and high expectations.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Participate fully in professional development, including IB training and workshops.
  • Engage in appraisal and performance management processes.
  • Contribute to departmental meetings, school events, and wider school life.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with parents, colleagues, and external stakeholders.
Safeguarding
  • Uphold and actively promote the school’s safeguarding and child protection policies.
  • Act in accordance with all GEMS and local regulatory requirements.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject (e.g. Geography, History, Global Politics, Humanities).
  • Recognised teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE, B.Ed or equivalent).
  • IB MYP and/or DP training or experience (desirable).
Experience
  • Experience teaching Individuals and Societies or related subjects at secondary level.
  • Experience teaching the IB and IGCSE curriculum is highly desirable.
  • Proven ability to deliver strong student outcomes.
