Position Summary

The Sleep Lab Technician performs a variety of sleep studies to diagnose the type and extent of disorders. The Sleep Lab Technician works closely with patients to diagnose and determine therapy for patients with a variety of disorders related to sleep. Technicians score sleep data and prepare raw data for physician interpretation.

Summary of Main Duties
  • Actively participates in upholding and promoting the vision and culture of University Hospital – Sharjah (UHS)
  • Complies with all UHS policies and procedures and fire regulations
  • Participates in all aspects of the International Accreditation program to assist UHS attain and maintain international accreditation standards
  • Participates in commissioning assigned areas and associated Clinical areas
  • Responsible to provide specialized advanced technical skills in all technical aspects of the polysomnographic testing.
  • Performs comprehensive polysomnographic testing (demonstrating the ability to follow procedural protocols such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), and parasomnia studies).
  • Collects data, while monitoring study-tracing qualities to ensure signals are artifact free and assures necessary adjustments are made in a timely manner, per protocol.
  • Analyzes and integrates patient information in order to identify and meet patient-specific needs (physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status regarding the testing procedure, and pertinent medical/social history) and to determine final testing parameters/procedures in conjunction with the analysis and associated interventions under the general oversight of the Medical Director or designee.
  • Duties include, but are not limited to, data entry and procedure room set up, application of electrodes and sensors per accepted published standards, patient education (pre- and post-testing procedures), preparation and calibration of equipment required for testing to determine proper functionality while troubleshooting as needed, appropriate application and utilization of auto, manual, bi-level, auto-bilevel, and adapt servo positive airway pressure titration therapies.
Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Oversees and performs difficult and unusual procedures and therapeutic interventions.
  • Accurately performs post study data transfers and documentations, along with post patient care and area clean-up.
  • Scores sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines and scores clinical events (such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals etc.) according to protocols.
  • A Registered Polysomnography Technologist (RPSGT) can perform the duties defined for a Registered Polysomnography Technician, and may provide oversight of other staff.
  • Communicates information to the responsible individual within an appropriate time frame.
  • Participates in orienting and teaching of nursing staff and physicians as related to monitoring equipment.
  • Will retain all necessary registration/license requirements.
  • Responsible for Self-development professionally by participating in internal orientation, mandatory, ongoing education programs, external conferences, workshops, seminars and courses that will enhance and maintain a current knowledge base.
  • Works any shift as per the duty roster of the Allied Health Department when designated.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned (within scope of practice)

Position Requirements/Qualifications
  • Graduate of Diploma/Bachelor degree in Clinical Neurophysiology Technology
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in the hospital
Licenses/Registration
  • Must have a valid UAE MOH Evaluation in Sleep Lab
  • Certification in BLS required
Position Criteria / Other Skills/Abilities
  • Computer literate familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel
  • Must be fluent in written and spoken English, spoken Arabic an advantage
