Job Summary
The Chartering Manager is responsible for managing and overseeing the chartering activities within the shipping or transportation company. This includes negotiating and securing contracts for the transportation of goods, optimizing vessel usage, managing relationships with clients, and ensuring compliance with regulations. The Chartering Manager plays a key role in the growth and profitability of the company.
Key Responsibilities
- Charter Negotiation & Contracts: Negotiate terms and conditions of charter agreements for vessels or other transport vehicles. Ensure that the best possible deals are made in terms of cost, schedules, and contractual obligations.
- Client Management: Build and maintain relationships with customers, freight forwarders, and agents to ensure repeat business and customer satisfaction.
- Market Analysis: Monitor and analyze market conditions, trends, and competitor activities to provide advice on chartering strategies and adjust plans accordingly.
- Operational Coordination: Oversee the execution of charter contracts, ensuring vessels are dispatched on time, fully equipped, and compliant with regulations. Coordinate between various teams (e.g., operations, logistics) to facilitate smooth transportation.
- Profitability & Cost Control: Ensure that all chartering deals are profitable by managing costs and maximizing revenue. Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency and reduce expenses.
- Compliance & Risk Management: Ensure that all charter agreements comply with industry regulations and legal requirements. Manage risks related to cargo transportation and chartering activities.
- Reporting & Documentation: Maintain accurate records of contracts, shipments, and financial transactions. Provide regular reports to senior management on performance metrics, market trends, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Team Leadership: Lead, train, and mentor a team of chartering staff, ensuring efficient workflow and professional development.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Maritime Studies, Logistics or a related field. A Master’s degree or relevant certifications (e.g., IMC certification) is a plus.
- Experience: Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in chartering or shipping operations with at least 3 years in a managerial role. Experience in the shipping, logistics, or transportation industry is preferred.
- Skills & Competencies:
- Strong negotiation and communication skills.
- In-depth understanding of chartering processes, maritime regulations, and industry standards.
- Ability to analyze market data and financial statements.
- Excellent organizational and time-management abilities.
- Strong leadership skills and team management capabilities.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Familiarity with chartering software and transport management systems is an advantage.
Working Conditions
- Ability to travel as needed for site visits, client meetings, and industry conferences.
- Availability for after-hours communication when urgent matters arise.
