Role Summary
Lead and manage university examination processes across multiple faculties (Law, Computer Science, Business) with added responsibility for designing and developing Level 3 examinations across a range of subjects. Ensure assessment validity, reliability, and alignment with programme learning outcomes while supervising examiners, recruiting and training markers, and maintaining academic integrity.
Key Responsibilities
Design and Blueprinting
- Develop assessment blueprints and question specifications for Level 3 modules that map directly to learning outcomes and graduate attributes.
- Define cognitive level distribution (recall, application, analysis, synthesis) and weightings for each paper or assessment component.
Question Bank and Item Writing
- Create, commission, and maintain secure item banks for multiple subjects; ensure items are clear, unambiguous, and appropriately levelled.
- Produce model answers, marking rubrics, and exemplar scripts for each question.
Validation and Moderation
- Lead peer review and moderation cycles for Level 3 assessments, including pilot testing and statistical item analysis where applicable.
- Coordinate double-marking, standardization meetings, and discrepancy resolution.
Assessment Methods and Formats
- Design a mix of assessment types (written exams, practicals, project briefs, case studies, online assessments) suitable for Level 3 learning outcomes.
- Ensure secure and fair implementation of online/hybrid assessments, including remote proctoring protocols if used.
Quality Assurance and Psychometrics
- Apply basic psychometric checks (item difficulty, discrimination indices) and use results to refine items and marking schemes.
- Implement standardization procedures to ensure inter-marker reliability.
Accessibility, Academic Integrity and Security
- Ensure assessments meet accessibility and reasonable-adjustment requirements.
- Implement anti-plagiarism measures, secure storage, and chain-of-custody procedures for exam materials.
Stakeholder Coordination and Training
- Work with Heads of Department and module leaders to finalize assessment briefs and schedules.
- Train examiners on Level 3 expectations, rubric use, and calibration exercises.
Continuous Improvement
- Collect post-exam feedback, analyze outcomes, and recommend curriculum or assessment improvements.
- Maintain version control and documentation for all Level 3 assessment materials.
Key Responsibilities - Operational & Supervisory (summary)
- Supervise examination checkers and marking teams across Law, Computer Science, and Business.
- Recruit, vet, and onboard examiners; manage examiner rosters and contracts.
- Monitor marking consistency, enforce marking schemes, and run moderation processes.
- Prepare reports on assessment quality, examiner performance, and compliance with academic regulations.
- Recommend and implement process improvements and digital marking solutions.
Skills
Qualifications & Experience
- Essential: Proven experience designing and delivering Level 3 (or equivalent) assessments across multiple disciplines.
- Familiarity with assessment design principles, rubric development, and basic psychometric analysis.
- Experience with question banks, item writing, and moderation procedures.
- Master’s degree required; PhD/ PHD Enrolled preferred in a relevant discipline or in assessment/education.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in university examination management or academic quality assurance, with multi-department exposure.
Skills and Competencies (additions)
- Assessment design: Blueprinting, rubric creation, item writing.
- Analytical: Ability to interpret basic item statistics and use them to improve assessments.
- Technical: Comfortable with digital assessment platforms and anti-plagiarism tools.
