Role Overview

The Senior Special Needs Educator (Primary) plays a critical leadership role in designing and delivering high-quality classroom instruction for autistic learners aged approximately 6–12 years. This role combines direct teaching, curriculum adaptation, mentorship of junior educators, and collaboration with therapists and families.

You will lead classrooms that are structured, supportive, and ambitious, ensuring students access meaningful learning while developing independence, communication, and self-regulation skills.

Key Responsibilities

• Teaching & Classroom Leadership
  • Deliver differentiated, structured primary-level instruction aligned with an international curriculum (e.g., British, IB-informed, or customized autism-specific curriculum).
  • Design and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) that integrate academic, communication, behavioral, and life-skills goals.
  • Use autism-affirming, evidence-based strategies such as:
    • Structured teaching (e.g., visual schedules, task analysis)
    • Positive Behaviors Support (PBS)
    • Social-emotional and executive functioning supports
  • Create a calm, predictable, and engaging classroom environment that supports sensory, emotional, and learning needs.
• Student Support & Development
  • Monitor and document student progress using data-informed approaches.
  • Adapt instruction for varying cognitive, language, and sensory profiles.
  • Support transitions (within class, between activities, and across school levels).
  • Promote independence, self-advocacy, and functional communication.
• Collaboration & Multidisciplinary Work
  • Work closely with Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, and Behaviour Specialists to ensure integrated support.
  • Partner with parents through regular communication, goal-setting meetings, and progress reviews.
  • Contribute to transition planning into mainstream, inclusive, or specialised secondary pathways where appropriate.

Leadership & Mentorship

• Mentor and support junior teachers, teaching assistants, and support staff.
• Contribute to curriculum development, classroom frameworks, and school policies.
• Participate in staff training, professional development, and reflective practice.
• Provide input into school-wide initiatives, innovation projects, and best-practice frameworks.

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in:
  • Special Education
  • Education (Primary) with SEN specialization
  • Psychology or related field with strong SEN experience
• Minimum 5–8 years of experience working with autistic children in Special schools or Inclusive international schools.
• Strong understanding of autism, neurodiversity, and differentiated instruction.
• Experience developing and implementing IEPs.
• Preferred
  • Postgraduate qualifications or certifications in: Autism Spectrum Disorder, DIR/Floortime, TEACCH, or similar frameworks
  • Wide exposure to customized curriculum from different countries and experience in adapting them in Singapore's local context.
  • Prior experience in a senior, lead, or mentoring role.
