Work Schedule: 12-hour rotating shift (day/night, including weekends & public holidays as required)
Job Purpose
The R&D Engineering Assistant (EA) supports R&D engineers in the development, testing, and improvement of hard disk drive media processes. The role involves hands-on operation of R&D equipment, data collection, sample preparation, and ensuring experiments are conducted accurately, safely, and efficiently in a cleanroom or controlled manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist R&D engineers in process development, experiments, and trials related to HDD media.
- Operate, monitor, and maintain R&D tools, test equipment, and pilot production machines.
- Prepare samples, materials, and test wafers/media according to experimental plans.
- Perform data collection, measurements, and basic analysis, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Record experimental results, process parameters, and observations in logs, databases, or reports.
- Support troubleshooting activities by identifying abnormal tool or process conditions.
- Carry out routine equipment checks, calibration support, and minor maintenance.
- Follow SOPs, safety guidelines, and cleanroom protocols at all times.
- Support shift handover by updating status, issues, and pending actions clearly.
- Assist in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance R&D efficiency and process stability.
Job Requirements
- Min a Diploma in Materials Science.
- Experience in manufacturing, R&D, or semiconductor/HDD-related industries is preferred.
- Comfortable working 12-hour rotating shifts in a manufacturing or cleanroom environment.
- Hands-on, detail-oriented, and able to follow technical instructions and SOPs.
- Basic computer skills (e.g. data entry, Excel, system logging).
- Able to work independently as well as in a team-based R&D setting.
- Good communication skills for shift handover and coordination with engineers.
Preferred Attributes
- Prior experience with HDD media, thin-film, vacuum, coating, or precision manufacturing processes.
- Familiarity with statistical data recording or basic process control concepts.
- Willingness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced R&D environment.
