Job description

We are looking for an experienced and safety-driven Port Captain to oversee the marine operations, navigational safety, and HSSE compliance of assigned vessels managed by a local based ship owner company.

The Port Captain plays a critical role in ensuring vessels operate safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with company policies, international conventions, and Flag/Port State regulations. This role combines marine operational leadership, assurance, and crew management to uphold the highest safety and operational standards across the fleet.

Responsibilities and Duties
Operational Oversight
  • Oversee day-to-day marine operations (navigation, stability, mooring, cargo/bunkering activities) to ensure safe and efficient execution.
  • Conduct ship visits to assess operational readiness, navigational standards, and onboard discipline.
  • Ensure vessels maintain valid class/statutory certification and required shipboard documentation.
  • Verify readiness of key deck equipment (e.g., mooring gear, hoses, fenders) and ensure updates of charts/ECDIS and publications where applicable.
  • Review Masters’ and deck monthly reports and follow up on outstanding issues.
Marine Assurance & HSSE
  • Ensure compliance with the Company HSSE policies and Safety Management System (SMS), including international and local marine requirements.
  • Conduct internal inspections, navigational/HSSE audits, and support external inspections, vettings, and SIRE as required.
  • Track and drive timely close-out of audit findings, deficiencies, and non-conformances.
  • Support ship–shore drills and onboard training to strengthen safety culture and emergency readiness.
  • Monitor environmental compliance and pollution prevention practices onboard.
  • Support incident investigations and corrective actions for assigned vessels.
  • Participate in Emergency Response Team (ERT) activities when assigned.
  • Liaise with relevant stakeholders (MPA/Flag, terminals, oil majors, class, owners/managers, insurers) on operational and HSSE matters.
  • Provide vessel performance feedback and recommendations during department/company reviews.
Crew Development
  • Mentor and assess Masters and deck officers on performance and safety leadership.
  • Conduct joining/re-joining briefings and support selection, promotion, and performance reviews of deck officers.
Requirements
  • Recognized degree in Maritime Studies or equivalent qualification.
  • Minimum Class 2 Deck Officer Certificate of Competency (Chief Officer).
  • Minimum 1 year sea service as Chief Officer onboard oil/chem tankers.
  • \>Master’s Certificate of Competency and sea service as Master will be an advantage.
  • Shore-based ship management experience preferred.
  • Strong technical knowledge of ship operations and marine regulations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
